Letting people in: Homepage as a gateway into the companies of Apple and Microsoft

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to analyze and compare homepages of the websites of two leading American computer and technology companies, the companies of Apple and Microsoft. The thesis comprises theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part firstly introduces the concept of genre and the classic Swales?s genre model, and then presents the revision of the model proposed by Askehave and Nielsen in order to better account for the properties of web documents and their medium, the World Wide Web; secondly the genre of Homepage is introduced. The practical part provides the actual analysis of the companies? homepages using the revisited genre model and compares how the communication purposes of each of the homepages are realized; and lastly, also the layout of the homepages is analyzed.

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je analýza a porovnání domovských stránek webových prezentací dvou předních amerických společností zabývajících se výpočetní technikou a softwarem, společností Apple a Microsoft. Práce se skládá z teoretické a praktické části. Teoretická část nejdříve popisuje, co je to žánr, a seznamuje s klasickým žánrovým modelem J. Swalese a poté s verzí tohoto modelu rozšířenou I. Askehaveovou a A. E. Nielsenovou tak, aby lépe odpovídal povaze webových dokumentů a jejich média, tj. celosvětové sítě World Wide Web; poté se teoretická část věnuje samotnému žánru domovská stránka. V části praktické je provedena samotná žánrová analýza výše zmíněných domovských stránek podle výše zmíněného rozšířeného modelu, která porovnává, jakými způsoby jednotlivé stránky dosahují svých komunikačních cílů, a na závěr praktické části je také analyzováno grafické rozvržení těchto stránek.
