The Parental Conflict and Risk Behaviour by Adolescents

Abstract:

The goal of this study is to examine the negative effects of parental conflict on adolescent behavior using longitudinal design. In the theoretical part, we focus on the importance and impact of parental conflict on risk behavior in adolescents. Attention is paid to the specifics of adolescence and developmental issues and coping with stress. The empirical part is based on cognitive contextual framework established by Grych and Finchham (1990), which we used as a tool for examining parental conflict and adaptation (adjustment) in children. This tool allows us to view the evaluation aspects of parent child conflict, and context of this evaluation, the application of coping strategies, and signs of risky behavior. As hypothetical predictors of risky behavior, we selected factors: the content of the conflict, threat, self-blame and triangulation. Respondents were divided into three groups according to subjective levels of coping efficacy. We follow the mediation effect of subjective levels of coping efficacy on signs of risky behavior among adolescents - the avoidance of parental control, substance use and depression. Testing has shown the moderational impact of low levels of coping efficacy on signs of risky behavior on the evaluation aspects of the conflict - and the threat triangulation. Abstract:

Cieľom práce je skúmať negatívne dopady konfliktu rodičov na správanie adolescentov v rámci longitudiálneho dizajnu v 15tich a 17tich rokoch. V teoretickej časti sa zameriavame na význam a dopady konfliktu rodičov na rizikové správanie u adolescentov. Pozornosť venujeme aj vývojovým špecifikám adolescencie a témam stresu a zvládania. V empirickej časti vychádzame z kognitívne kontextuálneho rámca vytvoreného Grychom a Finchhamom (1990), ktorý nám slúži ako nástroj skúmania rodičovského konfliktu a prispôsobenia (adjustment) u detí. Tento nástroj nám umožňuje nazerať na hodnotenie aspektov rodičovského konfliktu dieťaťom, a súvislosti tohoto hodnotenia s uplatňovaním stratégií zvládania a prejavmi rizikového správania. Ako hypotetické prediktory rizikového správania sme zvolili faktory: obsah konfliktu, ohrozenie, sebaobviňovanie a triangulácia. Respondentov sme rozdelili do troch skupín podľa subjektívnej úrovňe coping efficacy. Sledujeme mediačný vplyv subjektívnej úrovne coping efficacy na prejavy rizikového správania adolescentov – vyhýbanie sa rodičom (avoiding parents), užívanie navýkových látok a depresivitu. Testovanie ukázalo vplyv nízkej úrovne coping efficacy na prejavy rizikového správania pri aspektoch hodnotenia konfliktu – triangulácia a ohrozenie.
