Women's expectations and experiences of childbirth

Abstract:

Cíl: Cílem této bakalářské práce bylo zjistit, jaké mají ženy nejčastěji očekávání od porodu a jaké jsou jejich následné zkušenosti. Metodika: Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 7 žen. Jejich věkové rozpětí se pohybovalo mezi 19 až 28 lety. Šest žen porodilo vaginálně, jedna akutním císařským řezem. S respondentkami byly provedeny dva rozhovory v období od listopadu 2015 do února 2016. V průzkumu byla použita technika polostrukturovaného rozhovoru. Výsledky: Z výsledků vyplynulo, že ženy často očekávají bolestivý a dlouhý porod, především na základě všeobecně známých informací a zkušeností svých přátel. Dále se ukázalo, že pozitivně vnímají podporu svého partnera a porodní asistentky během porodu. Zkušenosti žen s porodem byly v porovnání s jejich očekáváním jak pozitivní, tak negativní. Negativní zkušenost však neovlivňoval porod samotný, ale přístup personálu. Závěr: Naplnění očekávání je pro ženy velmi důležitým faktorem, který ovlivňuje jejich zkušenost. Pro kvalitní a profesionální péči je vhodné zajímat se o představy žen a snažit se je naplnit. V případě, že to není možné, je důležité, aby pečující porodní asistentka využila svých komunikačních schopností a ženě vše vysvětlila. V opačném případě, kdy komunikace mezi porodní asistentkou a rodičkou neprobíhá nebo je neprofesionální, může být zkušenost z porodu negativní.

Abstract:

Aim: The aim of this bachelor?s thesis was to find out the most common expectations of delivering their child and what is their actual subsequent experience. Methodology: The research aggregate consisted of seven women. They ranged in age between 19 and 28 years old. Six women delivered vaginally, one delivered by an acute caesarean section. Two interviews were carried out with the respondents during a period from November 2015 to February 2016. The research was based on a technique of semi-structured interview. Results: The results showed that women often expect a long and painful delivery, mainly based on generally known information and their friends? experiences, and that the support of their partner and midwife during the delivery is perceived as positive. The respondents? delivery experiences were in comparison with their expectations both positive and negative. The negative experience however was not caused by the delivery itself, but rather the approach of the staff. Conclusion: Living up to expectations is an important factor for women, which affects their experience. To reach good professional care it is apt to be interested in women?s expectations and try to live up to them. In case this is not possible, it is important that the midwife in charge use her communication skills and explain everything. In the opposite case, when the communication between the midwife and the mother-to-be is low-quality or there is no communication what so ever, the delivery experience might be negative.
