Posttraumatic growth in parents of children with autism spectrum disorder and the effect of child diagnosis on their quality of life

Abstract:

V dnešní době jsou poruchy autistického spektra aktuálním tématem, a to hlavně v souvislosti s nově zavedenou inkluzí ve školském systému. Povědomí o těchto poruchách v naší společnosti není takové, jaké bychom si představovali. I toto povědomí má vliv na kvalitu života těchto lidí a jejich rodin. Diagnóza dítěte s poruchou autistického spektra přináší s sebou mnoho negativních emocí. Tyto negativní důsledky popisuje mnoho dosavadních studií. V oblasti psychologie se v posledních letech však mluví i o pozitivních následcích traumatu, tzv. posttraumatickém rozvoji. Naše práce se zabývá právě posttraumatickým rozvojem a také kvalitou života u rodičů dětí s poruchou autistického spektra. Výzkumný soubor tvoří rodiče dětí s poruchou autistického spektra (85 matek a 9 otců). Informace o subjektivní kvalitě života jsme zjišťovali prostřednictvím dotazníku SQUALA a pro získání informací o subjektivním posttraumatickém rozvoji rodičů jsme využili českou verzi dotazníku KIPP (Kansas Inventory of Parental Perception). Cílem práce je zjistit, zda existuje rozdíl mezi matkami a otci těchto dětí ve vnímané kvalitě života a vnímaném pozitivním zisku a zda na tyto dva fenomény má vliv spolupráce s institucí pracující s lidmi s poruchami autistického spektra a jejich rodinami. Také nás zajímalo, zda na subjektivní kvalitu života těchto rodičů má vliv to, kde bydlí, a to, jak dlouho diagnózu svého dítěte ví. Co se týče posttraumatického rozvoje rodičů dětí s poruchou autistického spektra, zde jsme se zaměřili na vliv intelektového postižení dětí na posttraumatický růst jejich rodičů. Výsledky nám ukázaly, že je důležité podporovat instituce pracující s lidmi s poruchou autistického spektra a jejich rodinami, protože to má na vnímání jejich kvality života pozitivní vliv a ovlivňuje to také jejich pozitivní zisky. Také jsme zjistili, že je nutné o poruchách autistického spektra více informovat veřejnost, protože jednou z důležitých věcí, které rodinám s takovým dítětem chybí, je pochopení druhých a tolerance ze strany společnosti. V této výzkumné práci jsme také zjistili, existuje rozdíl mezi vnímanou kvalitou života a vnímaným posttraumatickým rozvojem u rodičů, kteří znají diagnózu svého dítěte krátkou dobu a rodičů, kteří ji znají déle.

Abstract:

Today, autism spectrum disorders are the hot topic, especially about the newly introduced inclusion in the school system. Awareness of these disabilities in our society is not what we imagine. And this awareness affects the quality of life of people with autism spectrum disorder and their families. Many negative emotions are brought with the diagnosis of an autistic child. These negative consequences are disclosed in many previous studies. Psychologies in recent years also talk about the positive consequences of trauma called posttraumatic growth. Our work is focused on posttraumatic growth and quality of life in parents of children with autism spectrum disorder. The research group consists of parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (85 mothers and 9 fathers). Information about the subjective quality of life have been examined by a questionnaire SQUALA and to obtain information about posttraumatic growth we have used the Czech version of the questionnaire KIPP (Kansas Inventory of Parental Perception). The aim of this work is to determine if there is a difference in the perceived quality of life and perceived posttraumatic growth and if these two phenomena are affected by cooperation with institutions working with people with autism and their families. The results have showed us that there is important to support institutions working with autistic people and their families because there is positive influence on the perception of their quality of life and it influences their posttraumatic growth too. We also have found that it is necessary to inform the public about autistic disorders because one of the important things which families with this kind of child miss is an understanding of the others and tolerance of the society. In this research, we also have found that there is a difference between the perceived quality of life and perceived posttraumatic growth in parents who know their child’s diagnosis for a short time and parents who know for longer.
