Biofilms and their role in pathogenesis

Abstract:

Biofilmy jsou uskupení jednodruhových nebo smíšených populací, které jsou díky extracelulárním polymerním látkám přichyceny k neživému nebo živému povrchu. Bakterie žijící v biofilmu jsou fyziologicky odlišné od planktonních bakterií stejného druhu. Biofilmy mají významný podíl na vzniku lidských infekcí. Mohou se tvořit ve tkáních nebo na implantovaných lékařských pomůckách. Velký význam pro bakteriální adhezi a tvorbu biofilmu mají lektiny, které zprostředkovávají adhezi k hostitelským buňkám. Na druhou stranu jsou biofilmy úspěšně využívány v bioremediačních postupech. Mikrobiální biomasa má schopnost imobilizovat polutanty.

Abstract:

Biofilms are assemblages of single or multiple populations that are attached to abiotic or biotic surfaces through extracellular polymeric substances. Biofilm bacteria are physiologically distinct from free-swimming bacteria of the same species. Biofilms cause a significant amount of all human microbial infections. They can form in tissues or on medical implant devices. Bacterial lectins binding to host cells containing surface sugars have the great importance for bacterial adhesion and formation of biofilm in infection. Biofilm systems are especially suitable for the treatment of racalcitrant compounds because of their high microbial biomass and ability to immobilize compounds.
