Abstract:

Bakalářská diplomová práce „Díla J. R. R. Tolkiena, modernismus, tradice a motiv předávání“ se zabývá interpretací pojmů „modernismus“ a „tradice“ v díle J. R. R. Tolkiena. Práce převážně vychází z eseje ‚Tradice a individuální talent‘, 1919 od T. S. Eliota, Tolkienových esejů uveřejněných v publikaci ‚Netvoři a kritikové: a jiné eseje‘, 1997 a z jeho osobní korespondence. Úvodní kapitola se zaměřuje na inspirační zdroje, ze kterých Tolkien vychází při ztvárnění svého druhotného světa. Druhá část se zabývá pojmem „modernismus“ a výkladem Tolkienova díla podle Eliotovi definice. Následuje kapitola, která se soustředí na zkoumání pojmu „tradice“, jež úzce souvisí s jeho celoživotní literární tvorbou a je hluboce zakořeněna nejen v jeho odborné práci. Nakonec bude analyzován motiv „předávání“ v kontextu s Tolkienovou prózou ‚Pán prstenů‘. Celou práci je možné chápat jako zkoumání vztahu mezi Tolkienovou tvorbou a moderním dílem.

Abstract:

The bachalor thesis “Works of J. R. R. Tolkien, Modernism, Tradition and Notion of Giving“ deals with the interpretation of „modernism“ and „tradition“ in works of J. R. R. Tolkien. It is based on an essay „Tradicion and the Individual Talent“ by T. S. Eliot, published in 1919, Tolkien´s essays published in the book „The Monsters and the Critics and Other Essays“, 1997 and his private letters. The first chapter deals with the sources of inspiration from which Tolkien took inspiration for his mythical world. The second part deals with the concept of „modernism“ and describes Tolkien´s works by Eliot definition. The following chapter which focuses on research in the koncept of „tradition“ that closely connected with his literary work and deeply rooted in both all his literary and specialist works. Finally the motif of “ notion of giving” is analysed in the context of Tolkien´s prose „The Lord of the Rings“. The whole thesis should be understood as a research in relations between Tolkien´s work and modern work.
