Absinthes effect on attention and creativity

Abstract:

Tato práce zkoumá vliv absinthu na pozornost a kreativitu. Před samotným zahájením výzkumu byl proveden předvýzkum formou Dotazníku absintového pijana (85 respondentů), který ukázal, že 74% shledává absintovou ebrietu rozdílnou od jiných alkoholů a spojují ji nejčastěji s excitací, menší zátěží pro organismus a myšlenkovou volností. Druhou studií byl experiment zkoumající vliv absinthu na pozornost; 43 probandů (34 mužů, 9 žen) bylo rozděleno do tří skupin: absintová, alkoholová, kontrolní (anýzová limonáda) a byl jim podán drink tak, aby koncentrace v krvi dosáhla 0,4‰. Před a po podání drinku byli testováni Bourdonovou zkouškou a Testem pozornosti d2. Nebyl nalezen žádný signifikantní rozdíl hrubých skórů testů před a po požití drinku (F(1,40) = 0,746, p = 0,393, η2 = 0,018), ani mezi skupinami napříč administracemi (F(2,40) = 0,170, p = 0,844, η2 = 0,008), tudíž odlišný vliv absinthu oproti stejněprocentnímu alkoholu na pozornost nebyl potvrzen. Kreativita byla zkoumána pomocí případové studie vycházející z polostrukturovaného rozhovoru se třemi absintovými konzumenty. Metodou multicase study se ukázalo, že absinthe pravděpodobně může zvyšovat kreativní smýšlení a to za předpokladů správného užití (je konzumován v přiměřené míře a není míchán s jinými alkoholickými nápoji). Jako vysvětlení se jeví možný souběžný efekt alkoholu a bylin, kdy alkohol konzumenta uvolní a byliny z absinthu jej naopak stimulují, což dohromady podněcuje kreativní myšlení.

Abstract:

The thesis is focusing on the research of absinthe’s influence on attention and creativity. Before the launch of the main research, a pre-research was done in the form of a Absinthe Drinker’s Questionnaire (85 respondents), which showed that 74% of respondents consider absinthe caused intoxication different from other alcohol’s and they mostly associate it with excitement, lower physical exhaustion and freedom of thought. The second study took the form of researching absinthe’s influence on attention; 43 subjects (34 men and 9 women) were divided into three groups: absinthe, alcohol, control (anyse limonade) and was served with the aim to reach a alcohol blood content of 0,4‰. Before and after serving the drink they were exposed to the Bourdon test and the D2 attention test. No significant difference of gross test scores was found before and after administering (F(1,40) = 0,746, p = 0,393, η2 = 0,018), not even across the the administered groups (F(2,40) = 0,170, p = 0,844, η2 = 0,008), hence no evidence of absinthe’s influence in opposition to beverages with same alcoholic content was found. Creativity was examined based on a case study stemming from a half constructed interview with three absinthe consumers. Multicase study method showed, that absinthe probably can accentuate creative thinking; if consumed properly (in moderation and not mixed with other alcoholic beverages). One possible explanation can be the co-effect of the alcoholic and herbal content, where the alcohol works as a relaxant, while the herbs work as a stimulant, which arouses creative thinking.
