Transnational Social Network of Czech Texans of Fayette County

Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá transnacionální sociální sítí vytvořenou mezi texaskými Čechy z okresu Fayette a občany České republiky. Zaměřuje se na hledání funkcí a významu vazeb v této síti, které se snaží popsat a interpretovat. Práce objasňuje fungování původní sociální sítě na lokální úrovni v okrese Fayette a následně na teoretickém základě vysvětluje formování současné transnacionální sociální sítě. Cílem práce je nalézt význam a funkce vazeb hlavně z hlediska revitalizace kulturních prvků a etnického povědomí v okrese Fayette. V českém prostředí se pozornost obrací především na hledání významu vazeb v rozvoji vzdělávacích a kulturních aktivit a zjištění dalších vlivů a přínosů, jak z osobního či regionálního hlediska. Pro budoucí badatele práce nabízí podnět pro další výzkumy v této oblasti pomocí konceptů sociální sítě a transnacionální migrace.

Abstract:

This thesis explores the transnational social network created between the Czech Texans of Fayette County, a district of Texas in the United States, and citizens of the Czech Republic. The thesis focuses on this network’s ties and describes and interprets their significance to newly-created or revitalized relationships between the two groups. The thesis examines the function and operation of the social network of Czech Texans in Fayette County on a local level, but this research explains, on a theoretical basis, the formation of the transnational social network. The main goal of the thesis is to establish the significance of transnational ties, primarily their role in the revitalization of cultural elements and their role in increasing ethnic awareness for the residents of Fayette County. On the Czech side, the research explored the significance of these ties for their role in the development and expansion of educational activities, and their personal influences and benefits on individuals. For the researcher, this thesis offers a path to the study of cultural elements through the concepts of a social network and transnational migration.
