Social, Environmental and Spatial Contexts of Walking and the Current Trend Towards the Developement and Revival of Walking Transportation in Europe

Abstract:

Předložená diplomová práce se zabývá fenoménem chůze a současným trendem rehabilitace a rozvoje pěší městské dopravy v zemích západní Evropy.Usiluje o komplexní pohled na tuto problematiku. Poukazuje na význam chůze pro člověka. Zkoumá sociální aspekty pěší mobility i environmentální souvislosti chůze v krajině a ve městě. Představuje současné strategie evropské městské mobility, které kladou důraz na ekologicky příznivé druhy dopravy. Kritickým pohledem sleduje suburbanizační tendence rozvoje měst, naznačuje jejich negativní dopady a hledá způsoby, jak pokračovat jinak. Zdůrazňuje požadavek kompaktního města, který se vyznačuje vysokou hustotou zástavby a nabízí podmínky pro rozvoj a uplatnění pěší dopravy. Tato práce se také zamýšlí nad příčinami současného trendu podpory pěší mobility v Evropě. Nabízí přehled, strategie a východiska hlavních organizací a projektů se zaměřením na potřeby chodců. Mapuje situaci v České republice a zamýšlí se, jaké bariéry stojí v cestě rozvoje pěší městské dopravy u nás. Klade si otázku, zda-li je chůze jako legitimní dopravní prostředek v našich podmínkách uskutečnitelná. Na základě strategických dokumentů a zahraničních zkušeností předkládá několik obecných zásad, které je třeba pro úspěšný rozvoj pěší dopravy uplatnit. V závěru interpretuje prognózy postavení chůze v budoucnosti.

Abstract:

The present thesis deals with the matter of walking and the current trends towards the revival and development of walking as part of urban transportation in the countries of Western Europe. Struggling for a comprehensive view of the issue, I advert to the importance of walking for humans, investigate in social aspects of the walking mobility, and examine the environmental contexts of walking in cities and the country. Also, I describe the current strategies of the European urban mobility, which are in favour of the environment-friendly kinds of transportation, and look critically upon the suburbanization tendencies in spatial development, outlining its negative impacts and searching for alternative ways. My thesis pinpoints the requirement for a compact city, i.e. that densely bulit-up but offering conditions for the development and application of the walking transportation. Also, contemplating on the reasons for the current support to the walking mobility in Europe, I give an overview of the strategies and subject matters of some major projects and organizations focusing on the pedestrians’ needs. The situation in the Czech Republic is surveyed, trying to identify the burdens of the development of the walking transportation in this country and asking whether walking as a legitimate means of transportation is feasible here. Based on the study of strategic documents and foreign experience, some necessary principles for a successful development of the walking transportation are presented. Concludingly, various prognoses of the prospective position of walking are interpreted.
