English Language Proficiency in Spain: Situation in Secondary Schools

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá úrovní angličtiny ve španělském prostředí. Jejím cílem je popsat současnou situaci na španělských středních školách s ohledem na výukové metody, které se zde vyskytují. Dále srovnává dva existující systémy středoškolské výuky angličtiny a závěrem podává souhrn typických gramatických a syntaktických chyb, které se v dané lokalitě nejčastěji objevují. První kapitola popisuje historický vývoj výuky anglického jazyka ve Španělsku. Je zde popsáno, jak ovlivnila politická situace 20. století výuku jazyků a že tento vliv nese následky až do současnosti. Dále se práce zaměřuje na učební metody, které jsou aplikovány na španělských středních školách. Detailněji popisuje aspekty strategie komunikativní výuky (CLT), její původ a skutečnou aplikaci v praxi. Dále jsou předvedeny dva typy aktivit, které se zakládají na dané strategii a ty jsou pak propojeny se skutečnými aktivitami, které vycházejí z výzkumů dvou daných systémů. Jedná se zaprvé o běžné španělské střední školy (ESO) a zadruhé o školy zahrnuté v bilingvním projektu BEP. Jejich strategie (popsány v předchozí kapitole) jsou pak srovnány s výsledky výzkumu k jejich hodnocení. Přestože se jedná o poměrně nový projekt, závěry jasně upřednostňují BEP, jehož studenti dosahují výrazně lepší jazykové úrovně. Poslední část práce přestavuje kolekci chyb typických pro španělské mluvčí. Tento souhrn je založen na poznatcích několika studií, které se zaměřily na konkrétní rozdíly mezi danými jazyky (angličtinou a španělštinou), které způsobují určitý set gramatických chyb. Při jejich výběru hrála roli také osobní zkušenost, která vytyčila pouze chyby, které jsou skutečně přítomny v dané španělském lokalitě. Práce dochází k závěru, že přes mnohé změny a výrazné zlepšení je vhodná změna vzdělávacího systému, především co se týká zařazování nových metod do výuky.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the current situation of English language in Spanish environment. Its aim is to describe the present situation at Spanish secondary schools as far as the English language is concerned, to compare two existing systems and define the most frequented grammatical and syntactical errors that occur. First chapter of the thesis looks into the historical background of English teaching in Spain. It explains how the political situation of the 20th century influenced the language teaching and that its implications are still present in the society. Moreover, it focuses on the teaching methods that are present on the Spanish secondary schools. History, application and activities of the predominant Communicative Language Teaching strategy are described more in detail. Furthermore, two different teaching systems are presented – the regular secondary schools (ESO) and the Bilingual Educational Project (BEP). Their strategies (outlined in the previous chapter) are connected with the results of the surveys that have been carried out. The conclusions clearly give preferences to the BEP system. Although it is rather new the students involved demonstrated significantly higher command of the language. The last part of the thesis is dedicated to a collection of errors typically made by the Spanish speakers. It is based on various academic papers that concentrated on the particular language differences between English and Spanish which (by the language transfer) cause a certain set of grammatical errors. Another important factor was the personal experience, only the relevant errors that were actually present in the concrete Spanish environment are taken into account. The work concludes with the idea that despite the improvement that has emerged in the past years, a modification of the educational system is needed mainly to support the application of the promising strategies.
