Media Construction of a Cultural Memory: The Sudetendeutsche Zeitung (Munich) in Comparison with the Landeszeitung/LandesEcho (Prague)

Abstract:

The present master's thesis is entitled Media Construction of Cultural Memory: the 'Sudetendeutsche Zeitung' (Munich) in comparison with the 'Landeszeitung' / 'LandesEcho' (Prague). Its aim is to test whether the editorial offices publishing these newspapers have an identity-forming function for the minority of Germans in the Czech Republic and for the group of Sudeten Germans in Germany and other Central European countries. Another object of investigation was to find out how the style of publishing articles of the two editorial offices differs from each other. The master's thesis is divided into two main parts. In the theoretical part, the author first examines minority media, primarily newspapers, then the identity of Germans in connection with minority newspapers, then minority newspapers in Germany, and then German minority newspapers in other countries. The next chapters of the theoretical part are devoted to the history of the German minority in the Czech Republic, mainly information about the Landeszeitung / LandesEcho and Sudetendeutsche Zeitung. In the following practical part, readers' opinions about the two editorial offices are qualitatively examined, the responses of the editors-in-chief are examined, and finally the articles of each editorial office from 1998, 2002, 2004 and 2013 are compared and analysed. The results of all examinations are summarized at the end and a conclusion is drawn. Both print and online sources such as books and researches are used in writing this master thesis. The basis for the research is the questionnaires developed and the evaluation of the answers of the respondents. Overall, it can be concluded that both editorial offices participate to a large extent in the identity formation and media construction of the cultural memory of their target readers, although these are different for each newspaper. At the same time, it can be said that the Sudetendeutsche Zeitung and the Landeszeitung / LandesEcho magazine have much in common, but there are other significant differences, such as the topics of the articles.

Abstract:

Předkládaná magisterská práce nese název Mediální konstrukce kulturní paměti: 'Sudetendeutsche Zeitung' (Mnichov) ve srovnání s 'Landeszeitung' / 'LandesEcho' (Praha). Jejím cíle je vyzkoumat, zda redakce vydávající tyto noviny mají identitotvornou funkci pro menšinu Němců v České republice a pro skupinu sudetských Němců v Německu a dalších státech střední Evropy. Dalším předmětem zkoumání bylo zjistit, jak se od sebe liší styl vydávání článků obou redakcí. Magisterská práce je rozdělena na dvě hlavní části. V teoretické části se autor nejprve zabývá menšinovými médii, v přední řadě novinami, dále identitou Němců ve spojení s novinami pro menšiny, poté menšinovými novinami v Německu a dále německými menšinovými novinami v ostatních zemích. Další kapitoly teoretické části se věnují historii německé menšiny v České republice, hlavní informacím o redakcích Landeszeitung / LandesEcho a Sudetendeutsche Zeitung. V následující praktické části jsou kvalitativně zkoumány názory čtenářů na obě redakce, odpovědi šéfredaktorů, a nakonec porovnávány a rozebírány články jednotlivých redakcí z roků 1998, 2002, 2004 a 2013. Výsledky všech zkoumání jsou na konci shrnuty a je z nich vyvozen závěr. Při psaní této magisterské práce jsou používány tištěné i internetové zdroje jako jsou knihy nebo výzkumy. Podkladem pro výzkum jsou vytvořené dotazníky a zhodnocení odpovědí respondentů. Celkově lze konstatovat, že obě redakce se velkou mírou účastní na utváření identity a mediální konstrukce kulturní paměti jejich cílových čtenářů, přestože ti jsou pro každé noviny odlišní. Zároveň lze říci, že noviny Sudetendeutsche Zeitung a magazín Landeszeitung / LandesEcho mají mnoho společného, ale nachází se mezi nimi i další značné rozdíly, jako jsou například témata článků.
