Abstract:

Cílem práce je analyzovat dvě synonymní adjektiva little a small. Zaměřila jsem se na jevy absolutních a kognitivních synonym a dokázala, že little a small jsou kognitivními synonymy, tedy se v některých svých významech a kolokacích liší. Práce je rozdělena do dvou částí, teoretické a praktické. Teoretická část obsahuje lingvistickou teorii důležitou pro můj výzkum, v praktické části jsem analyzovala kolokace těchto adjektiv s podstatnými jmény v různých registrech a určovala mezi nimi rozdíly a podobnosti. Analýza se zakládá na práci se slovníky anglického jazyka a Britského národního korpusu.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to analyse two synonymous adjectives, little and small. I focused on the phenomena of absolute synonymy and cognitive synonymy, and proved that little and small are cognitive synonymy, i.e. differ in some of their meanings and collocations. The thesis is divided in two parts: theoretical and practical. The theoretical part provides linguistic background for my research. In the practical part I investigated the similarities and differences in the ways these adjectives collocate with nouns and the occurrence of these collocations in various registers. The analysis is based on English language dictionaries and the British National Corpus (the BNC).
