Seasonal plasticity of thermoregulatory behaviour in the alpine newt (Triturus alpestris)

Abstract:

Sezónní aklimace a termoregulace představují hlavní složky komplexních termoregulačních strategií, kterými se ektotermové vyrovnávají s heterogenitou jejich teplotního prostředí. Někteří ektotermové mají aklimační kapacitu sezónně měnit jejich termoregulační chování, ale časté použití konstantních aklimačních teplot během experimentů a nedostatek informací o termální heterogenitě prostředí v terénu, zamlžuje ekologický význam této plastické odpovědi. V této práci byla zkoumána sezónní aklimace preferovaných teplot těla u čolků horských (Ichtyosaura (dříve Triturus) alpestris), vystavených postupnému zvyšování aklimační teploty od 5 °C během hibernace až na konstantní teplotu 15 °C, nebo dennímu kolísání teploty mezi 10–20 °C. Bez ohledu na přítomnost denních teplotních fluktuací se průměr a rozsah preferovaných teplot těla u obou skupin zvýšil v odpovědi na posun průměrných aklimačních teplot. Směr a velikost této aklimační kapacity má potenciál sezónně zlepšit kvalitu teplotního prostředí čolků. Ačkoliv termoregulace a termální aklimace jsou často považovány za samostatné avšak koadaptovaná přizpůsobení termální heterogenitě, čolci využívají jejich kombinaci k řešení sezónní teplotní proměnlivostí v termoregulačně náročném vodním prostředí.

Abstract:

Seasonal acclimation and thermoregulation represent major components of complex thermal strategies by which ectotherms cope with the heterogeneity of their thermal environment. Some ectotherms possess the acclimatory capacity to seasonally shift their thermoregulatory behavior but the frequent use of constant acclimation temperatures during experiments and the lack of information about thermal heterogeneity in the field, obscures the ecological relevance of this plastic response. In this study, the seasonal acclimation of preferred body temperatures was examined in alpine newts, Ichthyosaura (formerly Triturus) alpestris, subjected to the gradual increase in acclimation temperature from 5 °C during hibernation to a constant 15 °C or diel fluctuations between 10–20 °C. Both mean and the range of preferred body temperatures increased in response to the shift in mean acclimation temperatures but irrespective of the presence of diel temperature fluctuations. The direction and magnitude of this acclimatory capacity has the potential to seasonally improve the thermal quality of newt habitat. Although thermoregulation and thermal acclimation are often considered as separate, yet co-adapted adjustments to thermal heterogeneity, their combined response is employed by newts to tackle seasonal variation in a thermoregulatory-challenging aquatic environment.
