„Some Things Never Change“: Between Present and Past Future of the Series. Neoformalist Film Analysis of X-men: Days of Future Past

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce představuje analýzu nejnovějšího filmu X-men: Budoucí minulost Bryana Singera, který se k sérii X-men vrátil jako režisér po několika letech. Práce sleduje historický kontext díla a jeho pozici především v současných cyklech filmů adaptujících příběhy z komiksů Marvel Comics. Pohledem totální recepční historie je zkoumán způsob, jakým byl původně komiksový příběh převeden pro film, a propagace snímku, která využívala zejména návratu Bryana Singera coby člověka stojícího u zrodu série filmů s X-meny. Neoformalistický přístup k filmovému dílu je poté aplikován zejména k analýze celkové formy díla a odhalení dominanty, která ji řídí. Závěr práce je také věnován možnému budoucímu vývoji cyklů filmů s komiksovými superhrdiny, jejichž pozice je v rámci hollywoodské produkce stále více upevňována.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis represents an analysis of the film X-men: Days of Future Past, the latest film by Bryan Singer who returned to the X-men series as a director after several years. The study follows historical context of the film and his position especially among contemporary film cycles adapting stories from Marvel Comics comic books. The way the original comic book story has been adapted and the film’s promotion using the director’s return as a person who began the series of X-men films is examined from the perspective of total reception history. Neoformalist film approach is then applied particularly in order to analyze the overall form of the film and to reveal the dominant governing it. The conclusion of the thesis is also devoted to a possible future development of film cycles with comic book superheroes, whose position is increasingly reinforced within the scope of hollywood production.
