Discrepancies of multiculturalism in Western Europe

Abstract:

Soužití mnoha rozličných kultur na území států západní Evropy ukazuje, že je nezbytné změnit způsob, jakým se uvažuje o konceptu etnicity a kultury. Stále hledáme přístup, jak teoreticky uchopit toto schéma, v němž se potkávají často protikladné představy o ‘správném’ způsobu života. Ačkoli političtí představitelé uvedených zemí odmítli ideologii multikulturalismu jakožto celek, stále jsou patrné jevy spojené s benevolentní kulturní politikou, mezi něž patří projevy etnických nepokojů namířených proti hostitelské kultuře či případy odmítání platných zákonů. V této práci představuji základní myšlenky multikulturalismu a vysvětluji rozpory multikulturních požadavků, které si kladou za cíl uznání kultur (ve smyslu, v jakém tento pojem chápe filosof Charles Taylor) s imigračním pozadím a rozdílný přístup k jejich příslušníkům, a to především co se týče práva a právního státu. Argumenty pohybující se v teoretické rovině jsou doplněny konkrétními příklady. V práci se zabývám především situací ve Velké Británii, dále pak Francií, Nizozemím a Německem, neboť tyto země jsou hlavními představiteli států, které se s imigrací potýkají.

Abstract:

The cohabitation of many various cultures in Western European countries forms a need for reworking the way in which we use the concept of ethnicity. The right approach to the schema, in which contradictory concepts of the ‘good way of life’ are claimed, is still to be found. Although multiculturalism as an ideological project has been officially abandoned by the Governments of those countries, the phenomena associated with unrestricted cultural policies of last few decades, such as ethnic struggles against the culture and habits of local people or the refusal of submitting to local law, are apparent. This thesis aims to examine the basics of multicultural idea, reveal and explain the essential discrepancies of its demands in the boundaries of a legal state regarding ‘recognition’ (in Charles Taylor’s sense) and special treatment of the members of immigrant cultures. It will also link these theoretical arguments with specific examples from the environment of Western Europe. The country of interest is mostly Great Britain, followed by France, Germany and Netherlands as they are the major representatives of immigrant states.
