Analysis of the effect of brown bear damage to rooting space on the stability and vitality of trees

Abstract:

Tato práce se věnuje analýze vlivu podhrabání stromů rostoucích ve výběhu medvěda hnědého v Zooparku Chomutov na stromy nacházející se nad brlohem. Byla stanovena hypotéza, že stromy rostoucí přímo nad brlohem, mají tak poškozený prokořenitelný prostor, že jsou náchylnější k vývratu ze svých kořenů než stromy rostoucí mimo medvědí brloh. V průběhu práce se zjistilo, že medvědí výběh je umístěn přímo na antropozemi, která je hlušinou vzniklou při výrobě kamence z kamencové horniny. Tahové zkoušky dále prokázaly, že ohrožené vývratem jsou jak stromy přímo nad brlohy medvědů, tak stromy mimo brlohy. Důvod, proč podhrabané stromy a nepodhrabané stromy mají minimální rozdíl ve výsledcích hodnocení stability, je to, že se jedná o specifické poškození pod stromem a během něj nedošlo k výraznějšímu poškození postranních kořenů, které mají zásadnější vliv na strukturální stabilitu stromu. Stanovená hypotéza ohledně vitality se potvrdila, avšak výsledky nejsou přesvědčivé vzhledem k minimálním rozdílům mezi zkoumanou skupinou a kontrolní skupinou stromů. Důvodem je pravděpodobně typ půd (antropozemě), na němž stromy rostou, dále fakt, že většina kořenů stromů se nachází ve svrchním půdním horizontu, tedy nad brlohy Tento výsledek analýzy vlivu poškození prokořenitelného prostoru medvědem hnědým na stabilitu a vitalitu stromů je nejspíše dán půdou, terénem a historií zkoumaného prostoru.

Abstract:

This work focuses on analyzing the impact of tree undercuts in the brown bear enclosure at Chomutov Zoo on trees located above the den. The hypothesis was established that trees growing directly above the den have their root space so damaged that they are more susceptible to uprooting than trees growing outside the bear den. It was found during the work that the bear enclosure is located directly on anthropogenic soil, which is a spoil heap resulting from the production of stone from sandstone. Pull tests further demonstrated that both trees directly above bear dens and trees outside the dens are at risk of uprooting. The reason why undercut and non-undercut trees show minimal differences in stability assessment results is that the damage incurred under the tree did not lead to significant damage to the lateral roots, which have a more significant impact on the structural stability of the tree. The established hypothesis regarding vitality was confirmed, but the results are not convincing due to minimal differences between the studied group and the control group of trees. The likely reasons are the soil type (anthropogenic soil) on which the trees grow, as well as the fact that most tree roots are located in the upper soil horizon, i.e., above the dens. This result of the analysis of the impact of brown bear root space damage on the stability and vitality of trees is probably influenced by the soil, terrain, and history of the studied area.
