The Impact of Corruption Perceptions on the Economic Growth of the European Union Countries

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá velmi naléhavým tématem korupce, která je vnímána jako nebezpečný všudypřítomný společenský jev. Zabývá se nejenom teoretickým východiskem korupce, především si klade za cíl stanovit, zda má korupce dopad na ekonomický růst zemí Evropské unie. Aplikovaná data v praktické části diplomové práce byla získána z Transparency International a Světové banky. Pro statistické potvrzení nebo vyvrácení hypotézy, že vnímání korupce má dopad na ekonomický růst zemí EU, byl sestaven ekonometrický model vícenásobné regrese, kde je hrubý domácí produkt vysvětlován nejen indexem vnímání korupce, ale i obecnou mírou nezaměstnanosti a mírou inflace. Dále byla do modelu ještě přidána zpožděná závislá proměnná z důvodu možné setrvačné tendence ve vývoji hrubého domácího produktu. Při modelaci bylo využito ročních panelových dat pro země eurozóny v období od roku 2004 až 2021.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the very pressing subject of corruption, which is perceived as a dangerous pervasive social phenomenon. It deals not only with the theoretical basis of corruption, but above all aims to determine whether corruption has an impact on the economic growth of the countries in European Union. The applied data in the practical part of the thesis were obtained from Transparency International and the World Bank. To statistically confirm or refute the main hypothesis, that perceptions of corruption have an impact on the economic growth of EU countries, an econometric model of multiple regression has been constructed. In the model, the gross domestic product is explained not only by the corruption perception index but also by the general unemployment rate and inflation rate. Furthermore, a delayed dependent variable was added to the model due to a possible inertia in the development of gross domestic product. The modelling used annual panel data for euro area countries from 2004 to 2021.
