The effectiveness of the Mirror Therapy for the functional recovery of a chronic hemiplegic patient: a clinical case

Abstract:

Hemiplegia is one of the deficits caused by stroke or after a traumatic event where the patient has paralysis in one half of his body, always counterlated to the emilate of the affected brain. Being a neurological condition it is always essential to rely on experienced staff or a qualified physiotherapist who can help and support the hemiplegic patient during his rehabilitation. In these cases rehabilitation has general fundamental goals such as reducing the condition of disability, promoting to the maximum, especially in the first months, functional recovery by exploiting neuronal plasticity, trying to optimize the functions left trying to preserve them for as long as possible. To promote neuronal plasticity, mirror therapy enters the field, a type of rehabilitation that exploits the fundamental work of mirror neurons, helping the patient not only from a physical point of view but also emotionally and self-esteem.

Abstract:

L'emiplegia ? un deficit causato da diverse possibili cause (vascolari, traumatiche, infiammatorie, neoplastiche), in cui il paziente manifesta una paralisi in una met? del proprio corpo, sempre controlaterale all'emilato dell'encefalo colpito, associata a disturbi di sensibilit?, coordinazione e a volte anche stato di coscienza e vigilanza. Essendo una patologia neurologica ? fondamentale sempre affidarsi a personale esperto o ad un fisioterapista qualificato, in grado di poter aiutare e supportare il paziente emiplegico durante il suo percorso di riabilitazione. In questi casi la riabilitazione ha obiettivi generali fondamentali, come ridurre la condizione di disabilit?, promuovere al massimo, soprattutto nei primi mesi, il recupero funzionale sfruttando la plasticit? neuronale, cercando di ottimizzare le funzioni rimaste, conservarle il pi? a lungo possibile. Per promuovere la plasticit? neuronale entra in campo la mirror therapy, una tipologia di riabilitazione che sfrutta il lavoro fondamentale dei neuroni specchio, aiutando il paziente non solo dal punto di vista fisico ma anche emotivo e di autostima.
