Heparan sulfate plays a significant role in the fibroblast growth factor signaling, where it acts as an FGF coreceptor, stabilizer, reservoir or regulator of diffusion. This bachelor thesis describes the structure and biosynthesis of heparan sulfate, its modifications and variants.
