Psychological aspects of working from home among young professionals

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou psychologických aspektů práce z domova u cílové skupiny mladých profesionálů. Zaměřuje se na jejich vnímání a prožívání přechodu na home-office, a to i v souvislosti s pandemií Covidu-19. V teoretické části jsou charakterizovány základní pojmy, jenž souvisejí s daným tématem. Na část teoretickou navazuje část praktická, která má podobu kvalitativního výzkumu. Výzkumná otázka práce je následující: Jaké jsou základní psychologické aspekty přechodu z práce v kanceláři na práci z domova u skupiny mladých profesionálů, tedy studentů a čerstvých absolventů? Metodologie práce je postavena na kvalitativním výzkumu a využitou metodou sběru dat jsou strukturované hloubkové rozhovory, které byly vedeny se vzorkem deseti respondentů. Ti byli vybráni na základě online dotazníku. Data byla následně vyhodnocena metodou IPA a pomocí softwaru MAXQDA. Hlavním cílem diplomové práce je detailně popsat základní psychologické aspekty přechodu na home-office u cílové skupiny mladých profesionálů, studentů a absolventů, a analyzovat jejich vnímání a prožívání této nelehké situace. Závěry mé práce by dále mohly sloužit zaměstnavatelům jako praktické poznatky k tomu, jak se v takové situaci vůči svým zaměstnancům zachovat, na co zaměřit, či čemu se naopak vyvarovat. Z mnou provedené studie vyplynulo, že alespoň ke krátkodobému zhoršení psychologických aspektů mezi vybranou cílovou skupinou vedla zejména celá situace spojená s pandemií Covidu-19 a vládní restrikce. Práce z domova jako taková je jinak mezi mladými profesionály vnímána velmi pozitivně, a to zejména kvůli vyšší důvěře a méně kontroly ze stran nadřízených, nebo možnosti vlastního plánování času. Flexibilitu práce vnímají dotazovaní jako obzvlášť vhodnou v jejich životní fázi, tedy při konci školy.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the issue of psychological aspects of working from home among the target group of young professionals. It focuses on their perception and experience of the transition to the home-office, also in the connection with the Covid-19 pandemic. In the theoretical part, the basic concepts related to the given topic are characterized. The theoretical part is followed by the practical part, which takes the form of qualitative research. The research question of the thesis is following: What are the basic psychological aspects of the transition from office work to home-office among the group of young professionals, also students and recent graduates? The methodology is based on qualitative research. For data collection were used in-depth interviews, which were conducted with a sample of ten respondents. They were selected based on an online questionnaire. The data was then evaluated using the IPA method and MAXQDA software. The main goal of the thesis is to describe in detail the basic psychological aspects of the transition to home-office among the target group and to analyse their perception and experience of this difficult situation. The conclusion of this paper could further serve as practical knowledge for employers on how to focus on, or what to avoid. The research I conducted showed, at least in the short term, that the deterioration of the psychological aspects among the selected target group was mainly caused by the entire situation associated with the Covid-19 pandemic and government restrictions. Working from home is otherwise perceived very positively among the young professionals, mainly due to higher trust and less control from supervisors, or the possibility of own time management. The flexibility at work seems especially suitable for them in their stage of life, i.e. at the end of school.
