Abstract:

Záměrem a zároveň i obsahem bakalářské práce ”Gender Differences: Internet chat“ je zmonitorování použití anglického jazyka na poli internetu. Internet je médium, které se jeví být jedním ze zásadních faktorů modifikujících tento jazyk. Vybranou metodou pro zpracování tohoto tématu je diskursní analýza, která je poměrně novou. Její hlavní vlastností je popisnost, to zn. že detailně popisuje a kategorizuje všechny jevy, které se objevují v diskursu. Analýza použitá v této bakalářské práci následuje tradiční postupy, které začínají zpracováváním nejmenších jazykových jednotek, např. fonémů, a postupně se dopracovává k větším a abstraktnějším pojmům, zejména k pragmatice a volbě témat komunikace. Dodatečným tématem této práce je nárys genderových rozdílů z hlediska používání jazyka na internetu. Je nastíněno hned několik faktorů, ve kterých se muži i ženy liší. Některé z nich jsou srovnatelné se současnými výsledky podobných experimentů, které byly provedeny na obdobné téma v oblasti mluveného či písemného diskursu.

Abstract:

The Bachelor thesis “Gender Differences: Internet chat” not only should provide a current overview of the state of English language used in the field of the Internet chat, but also it compares the use of language from the standpoint of gender differences that occur in language of the Internet chat. The data collected for the purposes of discourse analysis are downloaded from www.talkcity.com. This web site is one of the rare Internet chat providers in which participants are able to fill in information about themselves. The crucial information for this bachelor thesis is the gender of interlocutors. Discourse analysis which is applied follows the rules of traditional discourse analysis. It means that it analyses the transcript in several levels starting off by the smallest units of language such as phonemes and characters. Hereupon, the focus of the thesis shifts onto larger units – words. Furthermore, it looks at grammar of verbs, occurrence of hedges, polite phrases, syntactical structures, questions, imperatives, compound and complex sentences. The bachelor thesis culminates by topics such as pragmatics, topic, cohesion and coherence. Typical features of the Internet chatting, for instance emoticons and abbreviations are also covered. Most of the above-mentioned aspects are looked at from the point of gender differences, however, not always was it possible since examination of some language elements would have been highly misleading.
