Inflation in the US economy - measurement and reporting ability

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se věnuje problematice měření inflace ve Spojených státech amerických. Práce zkoumá metody a postupy uplatňované na poli měření cenové hladiny se zaměřením na hlavní cenové indexy. Práce také zkoumá vztahy mezi inflací a inflačním očekáváním domácností, podniků a subjektů finančního trhu. Po analýze silných stránek a nedostatků způsobů měření autor navrhuje opatření, které by lépe reflektovalo výdaje obyvatel v rámci ekonomiky USA. Pomocí sestaveného alternativního cenového indexu dochází práce k závěru, že nesprávné zachycení nákladů na bydlení nadhodnocuje naměřenou hodnotu reálného výstupu ekonomiky a životní úrovně USA.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the issue of inflation measurement in the United States. The paper examines methods and procedures applied in the field of price level measurement focusing on the main price indices. The thesis also examines the relationships between inflation and the expectations of households, businesses and financial market participants. After analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of measurement methods, the author proposes measures that would better reflect residents' spending in the US economy. By using the alternative price index, the work concludes that incorrect measurement of housing costs overestimates the measured value of the real output of the economy and the US standard of living.
