The use of popular culture in English language teaching in high school

Abstract:

This thesis explores the integration of popular culture elements into pedagogy, with a focus on the Czech Republic educational context. The inspiration for this research stemmed from a weeklong teaching experience, during which elements of popular culture were incorporated into instructional sessions. Feedback from students revealed a heightened interest and engagement, prompting an exploration of the potential benefits of integrating popular culture into educational practices. The theoretical part of the thesis delves into the concept culture, popular culture and the adolescence developmental stage and what learning strategies adolescent learners employ. The practical part of the thesis proposes modifications and alterations for selected exercises. It addresses the shortcomings of certain exercises and presents comments on the purpose and implementation of the proposed modifications. This thesis aims to provide educators in the Czech Republic with a valuable resource to enrich their classroom practices by integrating popular culture elements into pedagogy. It underscores the potential benefits of this approach in enhancing students' engagement, communicative competence, critical thinking, and media literacy. The findings and recommendations presented in this thesis have the potential to contribute to the ongoing discourse on innovative teaching methodologies and student-centered learning approaches.

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá využitím popkultury ve výuce Anglického jazyka v České Republice. Inspirace pro tento výzkum vzešla z týdenní učitelské zkušenosti, během níž byly prvky populární kultury začleněny do výukových lekcí. Zpětná vazba od studentů odhalila zvýšený zájem a zapojení, což podnítilo zkoumání potenciálních přínosů populární kultury do vzdělávací praxe. Teoretická část práce se zabývá koncepty kultury, populární kultury, vývojovou fází adolescence a studijními strategiemi, které adolescentní studenti využívají. Praktická část práce navrhuje úpravy a modifikace vybraných cvičení. Zabývá se nedostatky některých cvičení a představuje komentáře k účelu a realizaci navrhovaných úprav. Cílem této práce je poskytnout pedagogům v České republice hodnotný zdroj pro obohacení jejich výuky prostřednictvím zapojení prvků populární kultury do pedagogiky.Zdůrazňuje také potenciální přínosy tohoto přístupu při zvyšování zapojení studentů, rozvíjení komunikační kompetence, kritického myšlení a mediální gramotnosti. Závěry a doporučení prezentovaná v této práci mají potenciál přispět k probíhající diskusi o inovativních výukových metodologiích a přístupech zaměřených na studenty.
