Změna ve významu anglického slova cancel (rušit) podnítila vznik nového literárního žánru kritiky a apologetiky soudobých forem bojkotu a ostrakizace, souhrnně označovaných jako kultura rušení. Kdežto v minulosti byly rušeny události, nově lze rušit osoby.
