The Fortified Church in Kurdějov Near Hustopeče

Abstract:

Kostel byl stavěn v 2. polovině 15. století. Loď kostela je zaklenuta gotickou hvězdicovou žebrovou klenbou. Kurdějov a Hustopeče leží při moravsko - slovenské (uherské) hranici, kde se v minulosti opakovaly útoky Turků. Proto už při dostavbě kostelní lodě se nad klenbou počítalo s obranným patrem se střílnami. Kolem r. 1500 se dostavěla mohutná zvonice a hřbitovní kaple, které tvořily obranné bastiony při kamenném opevnění. Opevnění bylo postaveno po obvodu tehdejšího hřbitova. Celý komplex budov byl stavěn v období pozdní gotiky, a proto působí jednotným dojmem. V 80. letech 20. stol. byl areál budov citlivě zrekonstruován.

Abstract:

The fortified church in Kurdějov near Hustopeče was built in the second half of the 15th century. The nave of the church is constructed using star-ribbed gothic vaulting. Kurdějov and Hustopeče are situated in what was a restless military border area between Moravia and Hungary, which underwent repeated attacks by the Turks. For this reason, defence level chase-ports above the vaults were already projected during the construction of the church nave. Around 1500 a massive bell tower and cemetery chapel were constructed that served as defence bastions of the massive stone defences built around what was then the cemetery. This complex of buildings is an example of well preserved and high quality stonework showing the integration between church architecture and its use as defence fortification. The building complex was constructed in one period the late gothic which is why it gives such an architectonically integrated impression. In the 1980s the complex was restored in a sensitive manner, maintaining the high quality stonework and overall impression of the church.
