Predictors of health complaints in adults

Abstract:

The main theme of this Master´s Diploma thesis is represented by health complaints of Czech adults. The thesis explores the components of health complaints and compares their extent in developmental stages of adulthood. The goal is to verify the relationship between personality characteristics, dispositional optimism, defensive pessimism, health-related behaviour and demographic characteristics and health complaints. It also aims to discover the strongest predictors of health complaints from the noted constructs. The first part of the thesis provides theoretical background of health and health complaints followed by introduction of adulthood developmental stages in the context of health. The theoretical part then deals with various concepts of personality, optimism, pessimism, health-related behavior and demographic characteristics in relation to health complaints. The empirical part of the thesis is based on a quantitative research of 467 adult subjects aged 20 to 93 years old. Data were collected using the following methods: Inventory of health problems, Gordon Personality Profile – Inventory, Life Orientation Test - Revised, Defensive Pessimism Questionnaire and Health-Related Behaviour Scale. We have identified five types of complaints in adults: vegetative complaints, gastrointestinal complaints, complaints of overall weakness, mental health complaints and musculoskeletal complaints. Significant differences between developmental stages of adulthood were found in prevalence of gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal and psychological complaints. Responsibility, emotional stability, sociability, dispositional optimism, defensive pessimism, mental hygiene, avoidance of addictive substances, regular routine with relaxation and age, all correlate with at least one type of health complaints. The most correlations between the mentioned variables were found with mental health complaints, the strongest one with emotional stability. Women describe gastrointestinal, psychological complaints and complaints of overall weakness more intensively than men. The strongest predictor of health complaints are: emotional stability for vegetative and mental health complaints, lower age for gastrointestinal complaints and higher age for musculoskeletal complaints and mental hygiene for complaints of overall weakness.

Abstract:

Ústrednú tému diplomovej práce predstavujú zdravotné sťažnosti českých dospelých. Práca sa venuje explorácii komponentov zdravotných sťažností a porovnaniu ich miery vo vývojových obdobiach dospelosti. Jej cieľom je overenie vzťahu osobnostných charakteristík, dispozičného optimizmu, defenzívneho pesimizmu, správania súvisiaceho so zdravím a demografickými charakteristikami so zdravotnými sťažnosťami. Zároveň smeruje k zisteniu najvýznamnejších prediktorov zdravotných sťažností spomedzi uvedených konštruktov. Teoretická časť práce uvádza tematiku zdravia a zdravotných sťažností. Popisuje vývojové obdobie dospelosti, jej jednotlivé kohorty a ich zasadenie do tematiky zdravia. Následne sa venuje sa rozličným konceptom osobnosti, optimizmu, pesimizmu, správania súvisiaceho so zdravím, demografickým charakteristikám a ich vzťahu k zdravotným sťažnostiam. Empirická časť vychádza z kvantitatívneho výskumu na súbore zloženom z 467 dospelých vo veku od 20 do 93 rokov. Pre zber dát boli použité tieto metódy: Inventár zdravotných problémov, Gordonov osobnostný profil – inventorium, Revidovaný test životnej orientácie, Dotazník defenzívneho pesimizmu a Škála správania súvisiaceho so zdravím. U dospelých sme identifikovali päť typov sťažností, a to vegetatívne, gastrointestinálne, sťažnosti na celkovú slabosť organizmu, psychické a muskuloskeletálne. Výrazné rozdiely medzi vývojovými obdobiami dospelosti sa preukázali u miery gastrointestinálnych, muskuloskeletálnych a psychických sťažností. Konštrukty zodpovednosti, emocionálnej stability, sociability, dispozičného optimizmu, defenzívneho pesimizmu, duševnej hygieny, vyhýbaniu sa návykovým látkam, pravidelného režimu s odpočinkom i vek korelujú minimálne s jedným typom zdravotných sťažností. Najviac vzťahov sa potvrdilo pri psychických sťažnostiach, najtesnejší u emocionálnej stability. Ženy popisujú vzniknuté symptómy vo väčšej intenzite ako muži u gastrointestinálnych, psychických a sťažností na celkovú slabosť organizmu. Ako najsilnejší prediktor sa u výskytu vegetatívnych a psychických sťažností preukázala nižšia miera emocionálnej stability, u gastrointestinálnych nižší a u muskuloskeletálnych vyšší vek a u sťažností na celkovú slabosť organizmu duševná hygiena.
