The "maniac snipers" case - interpretation as narrative

Abstract:

Obsahem práce je výklad fenoménu „šílených střelců“, který vychází z nového ontologického vymezení problému. Z pozorovatelných symbolických přesahů útoků je konstruován koherentní „možný svět“ a v jeho dimenzi příběh, který je současně pozitivní definicí jevu a v jistém smyslu i vzorcem jednání. Fenomén je představen ve formě duální struktury tvořené rovinami (primární) „doslovnosti“ a (sekundární) „metafory“, jež disponují rozdílnými statusy a zároveň jsou v obousměrném vztahu závislosti. Metafora je odkázána na reprezentaci „doslovností“, a současně je organizujícím principem „doslovného“ jednání. Výsledný narativ má charakter jednoduché, přesto charakteristické sekvence. Děj rozčleňují proměny identity postavy pachatele a jeho vztahu k legitimitě. Příběh ukazuje fenomén jako organický celek nelegitimního násilí, jež zakládá „veřejný prostor“ pro „výpověď“. K uchopení metaforického pole jsou užívány koncepty literární teorie - „performativita“ fikční výpovědi, Aristotelovo pojetí mimésis, teorie možných světů nebo Ecův koncept modelového autora. Hledaný příběh vychází z popisu útoku perspektivou lokálního a globálního „obecenstva“ a tematizovaných „kulturních imperativů“ populární fikce a ideologie. Ideologické „kulturní imperativy“ se vztahují k „dvoustupňovému“ – aktuálnímu a ideálnímu - systému spravedlnosti a k uschopnění „periferie moci“ definovat a konfrontovat nespravedlivý řád. Obojí se váže k ideologii amerikanismu. Fikční „imperativy“ jsou představovány konkrétními úseky typických filmových či literárních narativů.

Abstract:

The thesis examines rampage killings, e.g. workplace shootings or school massacres. The perspective, which is based on different ontological framing, is the main “method“ itself. Symbolic features of the crime enable to construct a dimension of “possible world“ and to extract a narrative structure. The narrative can be understood as a „positive“ definition of the phenomenon as well as the pattern of acting. Rampage killing is a „dual“ structure composed of primary („literal“) and secondary („metaphoric“) level. These interdependent levels are not precieved equal. The metaphoric level can be present only by means of representation, actions on the primary level are organized by the secondary. The resulting narrative is a simple but unique sequence of events which are shaped through transformations of the identity of the gunman and his relation to legitimity. As the story shows, violence, public attention and „testimony“ are inseparably bonded in this phenomenon. Theoretical background consists of literary theory concepts – „performative“ quality of fictive narration, Aristotle´s mimesis, possible worlds theory and Eco´s model author. Reconstructed story is derrived from the view of the „audience“ and related cultural „imperatives“ - either from mainstream fiction or ideology. Ideological imperatives inspire the subject to identify and confront “unfair“ system without collective or authoritative acceptance. This “revolutionary“ capacity of the individual is linked to americanism. Other imperatives are narrative segments presented in mainstream popculture.
