Stylistic analysis of figurative language in W. Golding's "Lord of the Flies"

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce s titulem Stylistická analýza obrazných pojmenování v knize Williama Goldinga Pán much se zabývá analýzou metafor, personifikací a přirovnání, které autor v knize používá. Diplomová práce je rozdělena do pěti základních částí, z nichž první je vhledem do Goldingova života a způsobu používání symbolů v knize Pán much. Druhá část je teoretická a popisuje jednotlivé druhy obrazných pojmenování, zejména těch, které Golding používá nejvíce, a které v této práci budou detailně analyzovány. Konkrétně se jedná o metafory hry, personifikace přírody a přirovnání k jedincům. Třetí část této práce popisuje použité metody a analyzované texty. Čtvrtá část již analyzuje konkrétní použití výše zmíněných obrazných pojmenování v knize. Tato konkrétní obrazná pojmenování byla vybrána pro bližší analýzu z důvodu jejich četného výskytu v Goldingově románu Pán much. Závěrečná část je shrnutím výsledků a zjištění, které tato práce poskytla.

Abstract:

This Master’s Thesis titled Stylistic analysis of figurative language in W. Golding’s Lord of the Flies deals with analyzing metaphors, personification, and similes that the author uses in his book. This study is divided into five essential parts. The first part is an insight into Golding’s life and his use of symbols in the book Lord of the Flies. The second part is theoretical and provides the background for the following analytical part that analyses the book's specific figurative language. It describes figures of speech used in the book, as it is necessary to provide a theoretical description of the devices that are carefully analyzed in this thesis, namely metaphors of the game, personifications of nature, and similes describing individuals. The third part of this thesis describes the methods used and the texts analyzed in the study. The analytical part itself deals with the tropes mentioned above on the grounds of their regular employment in Golding's novel. The final part is a summary of the results and findings of this diploma thesis.
