Do odour repellents affect wildlife behavior?

Abstract:

V České republice se podíl dopravních nehod se zvěří za posledních 10 let zvýšil více než trojnásobně. Srážky se zvěří jsou celosvětovým problémem způsobující nezanedbatelné ekonomické škody a zranění, případně úmrtí živočichů a lidí. K minimalizaci střetů vozidel se zvěří bývá aplikována řada preventivních opatření. Pachový ohradník (PO) jako preventivní opatření podél komunikací je hojně využíván nejen v České republice, ale i v řadě evropských zemí. Byl studován vliv PO na srnce obecného, jehož kolize s vozidly patří k nejčastějším a současně velmi nebezpečným situacím. Bylo porovnáno chování srnce mezi obdobími bez použití PO a s PO pomocí instalovaných fotopastí během dvou let. Přechody komunikace srncem obecným byly nejčastější v nočních hodinách a za soumraku. Právě v tuto dobu by měli být řidiči vozidel velice pozorní a ostražití. Přítomnost PO neovlivnila ani dobu rozhodování srnce před přechodem silnice, ani počet zrazení od vlastního přechodu. V diplomové práci jsou diskutovány další faktory ovlivňující účinnost PO. Behaviorální hodnocení nenaznačuje rozdíl v chování zvěře bez a s použitím PO.

Abstract:

In the Czech Republic, the number of wildlife-vehicle collisions (WVC) has increased more than three times during the last 10 years. WVC is a global problem, causing significant economic damage, injury, or death to wild animals and humans. To minimize WVC, several preventive measures are usually used. The odour repellent (OR) as a preventive measure along the roads is widely used in the Czech Republic and many European countries. The effect of the OR on the roe deer, of which the collision with vehicles is one of the most common and very dangerous situations, was studied. Over the course of two years, the behaviour of the roe deer between the periods without and with the use of OR was compared by using the installed camera traps. Based on the deer crossing records, they were the most common during nights, and twiglight. At this time, vehicle drivers should be very cautious. The decision-making time of the deer to cross a road was not affected by the occurrence of OR, nor by the number of discouragement. Some possible factors influencing effectiveness of OR are discussed. Behavioral evaluation does not indicate a difference in the behavior of wild animals without or with the use of OR.
