Reproductive life history of women in historical populations based on the dynamics of cancellous bone tissue of skeletal finds

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá reprodukční životní historií žen v historických a prehistorických společnostech a jejím možným vlivem na mineralizaci skeletu v průběhu života. Na CT snímcích kosti spánkové skeletů z třech historických epoch (pravěk, středověk a raný novověk) byla na pěti místech měřena intenzita (stupně šedé) prosvětlení kostní tkáně odrážející její mineralizaci. Z důvodu standardizace mezi vzorky pak byla srovnávána relativní intenzita šedé čtyř oblastí (dvě oblasti kompaktní kosti a dvě oblasti spongiózní kosti) oproti svítivosti v oblasti páté (capsula otica), představující individuálně maximální denzitu prenatálně mineralizované tkáně. Následně byl testován vliv několika kategoriálních faktorů (pohlaví, dožitý věku a období) na varianci v tomto relativním ukazateli kostní hustoty. Vliv pohlaví na sledované proměnné nebyl nijak výrazný. U žen byl sledován rovněž vliv věku v době smrti, který ukázal také jako nesystematický a v celkovém srovnání statisticky nevýznamný. Nejvýraznější zaznamenaný efekt představuje vliv faktoru období na relativní svítivost v oblastech kompaktní kosti na levé i pravé straně u mužů i u žen, konkrétně postupné snižování relativní intenzity (kostní denzity) od pravěku do raného novověku. Interpretace tohoto výsledku je předmětem diskuse.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the reproductive life history of women in histori-cal and prehistoric societies and its possible influence on skeletal mineralization over the life course. CT scans of temporal skeletal bones from three historical periods (prehistoric, medieval and early modern) were used to measure the intensity (grayscale) of bone tissue light reflecting its mineralization at five locations. For the sake of standardi-zation between samples, the relative grey intensity of four areas (two areas of compact bone and two areas of spongiosa bone) was then compared against the luminosity in the fifth area (capsula otica), representing the individually maximum density of prenatally mineralized tissue. Subsequently, the influence of several categorical factors (sex, age at death and (pre)historical period) on the variance in this relative bone density index was tested. The effect of sex on the variables studied was not significant. In women, the effect of age at death was also examined, which also proved to be non-systematic and statistically insignificant in the overall comparison. The most significant effect observed was the influence of the period factor on relative gray intensity in the compact bone regions on the left and right side in both males and females, specifically the gradual decrease in relative intensity (bone density) from prehistoric to early modern times. The interpretation of this result is a matter of discussion.
