The Role of the Tuareg in the Spread of Terrorism in Mali

Anotácia:

Diplomová práce je cílená na roli etnické menšiny Tuaregů v souvislosti s rozšířením islámského radikalismu v Republice Mali. Téma práce je časově ohraničeno čtyřmi hlavními povstáními Tuaregů ve snaze o samostatnost, tedy mezi roky 1960 až 2015. V teoretické části práce jsou popsány historické souvislosti v regionu dnešního Mali a národu Tuaregů. Na základě rešerše dostupných zdrojů jsou dále ustanoveny a představeny faktory mající dopad na šíření islámského radikalismu v souvislosti s povstalectvím Tuaregů v oblasti. Tyto faktory jsou v analytické části použity ve srovnání podmínek jednotlivých povstání v čase. Práce je disciplinovanou interpretativní studií s cílem popisu podmínek konfliktu a ověření teoretického konceptu vybraných faktorů radikalizace. Cíl práce je tedy zodpovězení stanovené výzkumné otázky, které vybrané faktory jsou relevantní a ovlivnily vzestup islámského radikalismu v souvislosti s Tuaregy.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the role of the Tuareg ethnic minority in the context of the spread of Islamic radicalism in the Republic of Mali. The topic of the thesis is timed around the four main uprisings of the Tuareg in their quest for independence, between 1960 and 2015. The theoretical part of the thesis describes the historical context in the region of present-day Mali and the Tuareg nation. Based on a search of available sources, the factors impacting the spread of Islamic radicalism in the context of the Tuareg insurgency in the region are further established and presented. These factors are used in the analytical section to compare the conditions of each insurgency over time. The thesis is a disciplined interpretive study with the aim of describing the conditions of the conflict and testing the theoretical concept of the selected factors of radicalization. Thus, the aim of the thesis is to answer the stated research question of which selected factors are relevant and have influenced the rise of Islamic radicalism in the context of the Tuareg.
