Qualitative properties of solutions of linear difference equations

Abstract:

V této práci zkoumáme kvalitativní vlastnosti diferenčních rovnic. Výhradním objektem zájmu pak jsou lineární rovnice sudých řádů. Zajímáme se především o kritické a subkritické rovnice spolu s jejich vlastnostmi. Vše probíhá na pozadí existence kladného řešení, a tudíž i diskonjugovanosti dané rovnice. Část naší pozornosti tedy věnujeme i otázkám existence kladných řešení. V práci představujeme rozšíření klasické lineární rovnice o zpoždění v koeficientu. Text začínáme rovnicemi druhého řádu a konstrukcí řešení u^+- a v nich odvozených posloupností c^+-. Zajímají nás vzájemné interakce mezi těmito posloupnosti, mezi zadanými koeficienty rovnice a mezi kritičností a subkritičností rovnice. Zjišťujeme tak například, že rovnice je kritická pokud posloupnosti c^+- a koeficienty splňují jistou rovnost. Následně se zaměřujeme na rovnice vyšších řádů, na jejich kritičnost a související vlastnosti. Zjišťujeme, že definici kritičnosti musíme rozšířit na p-kritičnost. Dále dostáváme několik souvisejících výsledků. Například kritérium, za kterého je rovnice s jedním členem p-kritická, nebo zjišťujeme, že jistá rovnice se dvěma členy je vždy 1-kritická. Všechny zkoumané rovnice jsou speciálním případem obecné Sturmovy-Liouvilleovy rovnice. Nakonec se věnujeme prokládaným rovnicím, kde se zaobíráme jejich kladnými řešeními. Navíc klasifikujeme kritičnost těchto rovnic ve vztahu k jistému systému rovnic druhého řádu. Toho výhodně využíváme k ilustrativním příkladům chování jisté hypotetické implikace, jejíž případný důkaz by nás do budoucna zajímal.

Abstract:

In this thesis, we examines the qualitative properties of difference equations. The exclusive object of interest is linear equations of even orders. We are mainly interested in critical and subcritical equations along with their properties. Everything takes place against the background of the existence of a positive solution and, therefore, the disconjugation of the given equation. Hence, we devote part of our attention to the questions of the existence of positive solutions. In addition, the thesis presents an extension of the classic linear equation by a delay in the coefficient. We begin the text with second-order equations and the construction of the solutions u^+- and the sequences c^+- derived therein. We are interested in mutual interactions between these sequences, the specified coefficients of the equation, and between the criticality and subcriticality of the equation. Thus, we find, for example, that the equation is critical if the sequences c^+- and the coefficients satisfy a certain equality. Subsequently, we focus on higher-order equations, their criticality, and related properties. We find that we need to extend the definition of criticality to p-criticality. Moreover, we get several related results. For example, the criterion for which an equation with one-term is p-critical, or we find that a particular equation with two-terms is always 1-critical. All the investigated equations are a special case of the general Sturm-Liouville equation. Finally, we turn our attention to interlaced equations dealing with their positive solutions. Furthermore, we classify the criticality of these equations in relation to a certain system of second-order equations. Which we advantageously use for illustrative examples to demonstrate the behaviour of a specific hypothetical implication. The possible proof of the said implication would be of interest to us in the future.
