Grain-size characteristics of active layer at the James Ross Island

Abstract:

Poloostrov Ulu, severní výběžek ostrova Jamese Rosse, je jednou z největších odledněných oblastí Antarktidy. Jedná se o periglaciální oblast s přítomností permafrostu a sezónně rozmrzající činné vrstvy. Periglaciální oblasti dokonale odráží změny globálního klimatu, a to relativně rychlou odezvou na zvyšování průměrných teplot vzduchu. Ke studiu zrnitostních vlastností činné vrstvy byly využity granulometrické metody, přesněji metody analytického sítování a laserové granulometrie, jejichž výsledky byly dále statisticky i graficky zpracovávány a interpretovány. Zrnitostní vlastnosti činné vrstvy byly analyzovány v sedmi profilech na rozdílných geologických podložích různého stáří. Činná vrstva na lokalitách tvořených neogenními vulkanickými horninami vykazuje vyšší podíly hrubších frakcí. Sedimentární horniny určují jemnozrnnou texturu substrátu, jenž podporuje zvyšování půdní vlhkosti a teploty, a následný nárůst mocnosti činné vrstvy. Geologie lokality částěčně určuje zrnitostní vlastnosti činné vrstvy. Výsledky této bakalářské práce jsou diskutovány s podobnými výzkumy provedenými v kontinentálních a pobřežních oblastech Antarktidy a Subantarktidy.

Abstract:

The Ulu Peninsula, the northern part of James Ross Island, is one of the Antarctica‘s largest icefree areas. It is a periglacial area with the presence of permafrost and seasonally thawing active layer. Periglacial areas perfectly reflect global climate change and a relatively rapid response to increasing average air temperatures. Granulometric methods, more precisely methods of analytical sieving and laser granulometry were used for the study of grain-size characteristics of active layer, whose results were further processed statistically and graphically and interpreted. The grain-size characteristics of the active layer were analyzed in seven profiles at geologically different sites of different ages. The active layer at sites created by neogene volcanic rocks shows a higher proportion of coarser fractions. Sedimentary rocks determine the finely grained texture of the substrate, which promotes increase of soil moisture and ground temperature and consequently increase of the active layer thickness. Geology of sites partly determine grain-size characteristics of active layer. The results of this bachelor thesis are discussed with similar researches conducted in the continental and coastal regions of Antarctica and subantarctic.
