Landscape and Garden Motives in the Mural Painting of the late Roman Republic and Early Roman Empire

Abstract:

Práce se snaží rekonstruovat malířskou nástěnnou výzdobu s krajinnými a zahradními náměty v obytných římských domech a vilách v období pozdní republiky a raného císařství. Předmět práce interpetuje na nejlepších příkladech, kterým jsou rozměrné fresky s krajinou z Casa dell’Esquilino a zahradou z villa di Livia z Prima Porta. Pojednává o inspiraci v okolí, kterou ilustruje pomocí antických autorů, a zkoumá kulturní vlivy. Snaží se přijít na jejich výjimečnost v typickém římském umění, a proto se dále okrajově zmiňuje o dalších nálezech z Říma a měst pod Vesuvem, kde blíže rozebírá motiv krajiny a zahrady v obraze.

Abstract:

The thesis aims to reconstruct the decorative mural painting with landscape and garden motives in the residential Roman houses and villas in the time of the late Roman Republic and early period of the Roman Empire. It interprets the subject of the thesis on the best examples, which are the large frescoes with a landscape of Casa dell‘Esquilino and a garden of the Villa di Livia in Prima Porta. It discusses the inspiration derived in the surroundings, what is demonstrated with the help of the Ancient literary authors, and investigates cultural influences. The main effort of this part is to point out the uniqueness of these frescoes in the typical Roman art. Other findings from Rome and the Cities nearby Vesuvius are briefly mentioned with a concentration primarily on the garden and landscape motives on the pictures.
