Methods for Designing Educational Cybersecurity Games

Abstract:

Kyberbezpečnostné vzdelávacie hry sú populárnou formou praktických cvičení, ktoré používajú gamifikáciu na trénovanie zručností v oblasti informačnej bezpečnosti a zvyšovanie kyberbezpečnostného povedomia. V súčasnosti však neexistujú štandardizované metódy na vytváranie kyberbezpečnostných hier. V tejto práci sme vykonali rozsiahly prehľad publikácií, ktoré zohľadňujú rôzne aspekty herného dizajnu. Následne sme na základe rešerše literatúry navrhli metódy na vytváranie kyberbezpečnostných vzdelávacích hier. Praktickým výstupom práce sú samotné metódy a vzdelávacia hra Junior hacker training, ktorá bola vytvorená na základe metód s cieľom otestovať ich použiteľnosť. Metódy boli vyhodnotené pomocou dotazníka s piatimi hernými dizajnérmi, ktorí na základe metód vytvorili svoje hry. Výsledky ukázali, že navrhované metódy sú použiteľné pre dizajnovanie kyberbezpečnostných vzdelávacích hier. Z toho dôvodu môže byť táto práca použitá ako návod pre začínajúcich herných dizajnérov pre plánovanie a vývoj kyberbezpečnostných vzdelávacích hier. Výstupy tejto práce sú voľne dostupné a publikované ako poster na medzinárodnej konferencii o vzdelávaní v informatike.

Abstract:

Cybersecurity educational games are a popular form of hands-on exercises that use gamification to train information security skills and enhance cybersecurity awareness. However, there are currently no standardized methods for creating cybersecurity games. In this thesis, we performed an extensive literature review of publications considering different game design aspects. Then, based on the literature review, we proposed methods for designing cybersecurity educational games. The practical outputs of the thesis are the methods themselves and the educational game Junior hacker training that was created based on the methods to test their applicability. The methods were evaluated using a questionnaire with five game designers who created their games based on the methods. The results indicated that the proposed methods are applicable for designing cybersecurity educational games. Therefore, this work can be used as a guide for novice game designers for planning and developing cybersecurity educational games. Outputs of this thesis are freely available and also published as a poster on an international conference on computing education.
