The role of land snails in food chains

Abstract:

Suchozemští plži představují nezbytnou složku potravních sítí a koloběhu živin suchozemských ekosystémů. Naše chápání jejich potravního chování, dělení trofických nik a interakcí s predátory však zůstává neúplné. Tato disertační práce přispívá k vyřešení některých z těchto otázek. Obecně se suchozemští plži považují za nespecializované spásače s tendencí k všežravosti, ovšem jejich konkrétní potrava a potravní návyky často nejsou dostatečně prozkoumány. V první části jsem se zabýval analýzou stabilních izotopů společenstev suchozemských plžů lužního lesa. U většiny druhů jsme pozorovali vysokou vnitrodruhovou variabilitu v signálech δ (delta) vyjadřujících odchylku poměru těžšího izotopu vůči lehčímu ve zkoumaném vzorku, což ukazuje na jejich oportunistické chování při hledání potravy. To umožňuje plžům přecházet mezi zdroji potravy na základě jejich dostupnosti. Navíc se trofické niky jednotlivých druhů výrazně překrývaly. Nicméně arborikolní druhy vykazovaly mírně odlišnou pozici nik ukazující na odlišnou potravu. Tyto závěry jsou tak v rozporu s konvenční teorií, že dělení trofických nik předchází soupeření o potravu. Místo toho se zdá, že dostatečné množství potravních zdrojů umožňuje koexistenci více druhů plžů ve vysokých abundancích. Analýza stabilních izotopů čtyř společenstev suchozemských plžů dále odhalila, že velikost trofických nik koreluje s velikostí těla a životním stylem daného druhu. Menší a arborikolní druhy měly větší trofické niky, patrně kvůli omezené pohyblivosti a prostorově strukturovaným zdrojům potravy, zatímco větší, pohyblivější, druhy vyskytující se na povrchu půdy, měly niky užší, což zjevně odráželo homogenní potravu spočívající převážně v listovém opadu. Na základě výčtu malakofágních predátorů vyplývá, že predace může hrát klíčovou roli v dynamice populací plžů. Jednotliví predátoři museli vyvinout strategie k překonání bariéry ve formě ulity, které zahrnují rozbití ulity nebo vstup do ulity skrz ústí. Na základě zanechaných dokladů predace lze mnohé z těchto predátorů blíže identifikovat. Zjistil jsem, že míra predace kolísala v závislosti na typu stanoviště, přičemž nejvíce případů predace připadalo na predaci střevlíky. Nicméně rozložení predace mezi různé druhy kořisti má za následek celkově mírný dopad na společenstva suchozemských plžů. Naopak výzkum stepního plže žitovka obilná (Granaria frumentum) ukázal rozdíly ve vysoké míře predace ze strany predátorů a parazitoidů mezi juvenilními a dospělými jedinci a podtrhuje obrannou funkci zpevněného obústí ulity. Prezentované výsledky rovněž naznačují značnou míru predace na populace hlemýždě zahradního (Helix pomatia). V dalším výzkumu jsem se detailněji zaměřil na malakofágii u střevlíků, kteří jsou považováni za nespecializované predátory nebo všežravce. Laboratorní experimenty ukázaly, že tito střevlíci jsou schopni lovit plže, přičemž míra konzumace plžů závisela na druhu střevlíka a jeho velikosti. Býložraví a semenožraví střevlíci mají menší obtíže s rozbíjením ulit plžů, jelikož lze očekávat podobné adaptace k rozbíjení pevných ulit a semen s tvrdou skořápkou. Odlišné typy poškození ulit byly spojeny s druhově specifickými vlastnostmi střevlíků, a velikostí kořisti. Poškození ulit známé pro malakofágní specialisty se v této studii vyskytovalo jen zřídka, pravděpodobně kvůli absenci asymetrických čelistí. Výsledky výzkumu podtrhují oportunistické potravní chování suchozemských plžů a funkci dostatečného množství potravních zdrojů umožňujících koexistenci více druhům plžů. Abstract:

Land snails are known to be essential components of terrestrial ecosystems because of their role in food webs and nutrient cycling. However, our understanding of their foraging ecology, trophic niche partitioning, and interactions with predators remains incomplete. This dissertation serves to fill some of these knowledge gaps. Land snails are often considered unspecific grazers with omnivorous tendencies, but their exact foraging strategies and diets are often not well understood. First, I applied stable isotope analysis of land snail assemblages from a floodplain forest floor. It revealed high intraspecific variation in isotope signatures for most species, indicating their opportunistic feeding behaviour. This adaptability allows the snails to switch between different food sources depending on availability. Additionally, the trophic niches of these species overlap significantly. However, the arboreal species exhibited slightly different niche positions, indicating a specific feeding pattern. These conclusions thus contradict the conventional theory that partitioning into trophic niches prevents competition for food. Instead, an abundance of food resources seems to facilitate the coexistence of multiple snail species in high-density populations. Second, stable isotope analysis in four local land snail assemblages revealed that niche size correlates with species body size and lifestyle. Smaller and arboreal species had larger niches due to limited mobility and spatially structured food resources, while larger, highly mobile, epigean species had narrower niches, apparently reflecting a homogeneous diet of leaf litter. Based on the number of malacophagous predators, predation appears to be a key factor in snail population dynamics. Predators have developed strategies to overcome the snail's barrier in the form of a snail shell, including breaking the shell and entering the shell through its aperture. Based on the predation evidence left on the surface or inside the snail shell, these predators can be identified by analysing fresh empty shells. I found differences in predation rates in different habitats, with most cases of predation being due to predation by carabid beetles. However, the distribution of predation among different prey species within an assemblage results in a low impact of predation. In contrast, the study of the steppe snail Granaria frumentum revealed differences in high predation rates by predators and parasitoids between juvenile and adult snails and the antipredator function of a hardened shell aperture. Considerable predation pressure has also been assumed for Helix pomatia populations. Recent research has focused on malacophagy among carabids, which are characterised as generalist predators and omnivores. Laboratory experiments showed that these predators are able to prey on snails using shell-breaking attacks, and that acceptance of snail prey was related to carabid species and its size. Herbivorous and seed-eating carabid species are thought to have less difficulty breaking snail shells because of their experience with hard-shelled seeds. Different shell damage patterns were linked to the specific feeding preferences of carabid species and prey size. Moreover, the type of shell damage known for malacophagous specialists was rarely observed in this study, likely due to the absence of asymmetric mandibles. Overall, the research results underline the opportunistic feeding behaviour of land snails and the role of abundance of food resources, which enables the coexistence of several snail species. It also highlights the complexity of predator-prey interactions in shaping snail populations and the importance of studying the specific behaviours and adaptations of the different predators.
