Coronation operas with an emphasis on opera Gloriana by Benjamin Britten

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá korunovačními operami a speciálně se zaměřuje na korunovační operu Gloriana od Benjamina Brittena. Hlavním cílem práce není jen pouhé uvedení a popsání opery Gloriana nebo jiných korunovačních oper, ale také vymezení jednotlivých korunovačních událostí. Díky tomu se může čtenář dostatečně seznámit se souvislostmi, při nichž opery vznikaly. První část práce nejprve definuje samotný pojem korunovace, potom vysvětluje spojitost opery s tímto ceremoniálem a uvádí několik příkladů či různé zajímavosti s tím spojené. Další část se soustředí na korunovaci císaře Karla VI. Habsburského českým králem a korunovaci císaře Leopolda II. Habsburského taktéž českým králem, jelikož k těmto ceremoniálům vznikla významná díla, jejichž premiéry se odehrály v Praze. Třetí kapitola se pak velmi podrobně zabývá britskou korunovací Alžběty II. a její korunovační operou Gloriana od Benjamina Brittena. V této části autor popisuje například příčiny vzniku opery, ohlasy prvního uvedení či zajímavosti jejího hudebně dramatického zpracování. Poté následuje interpretační analýza nahrávky druhé Loutnové písně „Happy, Happy were he“ Roberta Devereux, hraběte z Essexu v podání anglického tenoristy Petera Pearse. V závěru celé práce se pak autor věnuje osudům opery Gloriana a zmiňuje její nejúspěšnější uvedení či nahrávky.

Abstract:

The thesis at hand delves into coronation operas, with a specific focus on Benjamin Britten's Gloriana. The main goal of the thesis is not only to introduce and describe Gloriana or other coronation operas, but also to delineate the individual coronation events. This allows the reader to become sufficiently acquainted with the circumstances under which the operas were created. The first section initially defines the concept of coronation, then explains the connection between opera and this ceremony, and provides several examples or various interesting facts associated with it. The next section focuses on the coronation of Emperor Charles VI of the Habsburg dynasty as the Czech king and the coronation of Emperor Leopold II of the Habsburg dynasty as the Czech king, as important works were created for these ceremonies and their premieres were held in Prague. The third chapter then thoroughly examines the British coronation of Elizabeth II and her coronation opera Gloriana by Benjamin Britten. In this section, the author describes, for example, the reasons for its creation, the reception of its first performance, or interesting aspects of its musical-dramatic treatment. This is followed by an interpretive analysis of the recording of the second Lute song "Happy, Happy were he" from Robert Devereux, the Earl of Essex, performed by the English tenor Peter Pears. Finally, the author devotes attention to the fate of Gloriana and highlighting its most successful performances or recordings in the conclusion of the entire thesis.
