Stand-off laser induced breakdown spectrometry (LIBS)

Abstract:

Předmětem práce je vývoj technik spektroskopie laserem buzeného plazmatu (LIBS) vzdálených objektů. Náplní bylo navržení rychlé a účinné metody pro klasifikaci materiálů na základě zpracování LIBS spekter, a to pro možné použití přímo v terénu se zaměřením na využití k analýze předmětů kulturního dědictví. Práce je zaměřena na třídění archeologických nálezů a stavebních materiálů (cihel) s výhledem na využití v restaurátorství historických budov. K měření bylo využito zařízení stand-off LIBS vyvíjené v Laboratoři laserové spektroskopie na Ústavu fyzikálního inženýrství Fakulty strojního inženýrství Vysokého učení technického v Brně (UFI VUT). Bylo testováno několik přístupů chemometrického zpracování dat. LIBS spektra vzorků simulujících archeologické nálezy (kosti, zuby, škeble, keramiku, cihly, maltu, půdu) byla nejdříve rozdělena na trénovací a testovací množinu. K redukci proměnných (hodnot λ a intenzit) sloužila metoda hlavních komponent (PCA). Hlavní komponenty s největším rozptylem obsahují informace o zpracovávaném souboru dat dostačující k jeho dalšímu zpracování – klasifikaci. Z klasifikačních metod mnohorozměrné analýzy byly na několik prvních hlavních komponent aplikovány klasifikační a regresní stromy (CART), support vector machines (SVM), lineární diskriminační analýza (LDA) a umělé neuronové sítě (ANN). Nejlepší schopnost predikce vykázaly ANN (87,5 % správných zařazení), následované LDA (75 % správných zařazení). Následovalo ověření úspěšnosti vybrané metody (LDA) v klasifikaci souboru vzorků s podobnou matricí. Zkoumaným materiálem byly cihly lišící se lokalitou původu. Pro daný typ vzorků prokázala LDA dobrou predikční schopnost, a to jak při aplikaci na spektra získaná pomocí zařízení stand-off LIBS, tak pomocí stolní LIBS aparatury. Během zpracovávání dat byl navíc objeven trend, který se dal po bližším zkoumání spojit s teplotou výpalu jednotlivých vzorků cihel. Tato informace, obsažená v LIBS spektrech, by mohla být archeology využita pro určování teploty výpalu neznámých vzorků. Při analýze standardních referenčních materiálů sulfidických rud mědi pomocí stolní LIBS aparatury byla zjištěna závislost predikční schopnosti klasifikační metody (SVM) na podmínkách měření (a tedy na výsledné plošné hustotě výkonu). I tato informace se vzala v úvahu při návrhu postupu a metod klasifikace pro aplikační software zařízení stand-off LIBS vyvíjený v Laboratoři laserové spektroskopie na FSI VUT v Brně.

Abstract:

The object of this work is the development of techniques of stand-off laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). The aim was to develop a rapid and effective method for the materials classification based on LIBS spectra processing. The possible use of this method is in-situ analysis of cultural heritage objects. The work is focused on sorting of archaeological findings and construction materials (bricks) with a prospect of historic buildings restoration. Measurements were realized using stand-off LIBS device developed in the Laboratory of Laser Spectroscopy at the Institute of Physical Engineering, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FME), Brno University of Technology (BUT). Several approaches of chemometric data processing have been tested. LIBS spectra of archaeological discoveries substitutes (bones, teeth, shells, pottery, bricks, mortar, soil) were divided into training and test sets. To reduce variables (values of λ and intensity), principal component analysis (PCA) was applied. The principal components with the largest variance include information sufficient for further processing of the data which is classification. Multivariate classification methods, such as classification and regression trees (CART), support vector machines (SVM), linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and artificial neural networks (ANN), were applied using first few principal components as inputs. ANN showed the best prediction ability (87.5 % of classification was correct), followed by LDA (75 % of correct classification). Later, the chosen method (LDA) was tested for the classification of the samples with a similar matrix. The investigated materials were bricks with different site of origin. LDA showed good predictive ability for a given type of samples when applied to spectra obtained using both the stand-off LIBS and the table-top LIBS apparatus. During the data processing, a special trend was discovered, which after detailed examination was found to be connected with the bricks firing temperature. This information contained in the LIBS spectra could be used by archaeologists for the firing temperature determination of unknown samples. Standard reference materials of copper sulphide ores were analyzed using table-top LIBS apparatus. The dependence of predictive capability of classification method (SVM) on the measurement conditions (and therefore on irradiance) was discovered. This finding, among others, was taken into account when creating the classification procedure for application software for stand-off LIBS developed in the FME BUT.
