Burnout syndrome in health professionals as a result of excessive psychological stress

Abstract:

Úvod: Diplomová práce je zaměřena na problematiku syndromu vyhoření u zdravotnických pracovníků. Bude se v ní zvýrazňovat i problematika vzniklé pandemie koronaviru, která značně podněcuje zhoršení zdravotního stavu a tím přispívá ke vzniku syndromu vyhoření. Cíl: Posouzení rizika ohrožením syndromem vyhoření u nelékařských zdravotnických pracovníků na interních a chirurgických odděleních. Zhodnocení míra rizika v závislosti na psychické a pracovní zátěži. Metodika: Výzkumné šetření probíhalo pomocí standardizovaného dotazníku Burnout Measure psychického vyhoření a vytvořených vlastních otázek, které se týkaly socio-demografických údajů a souvislostmi s pandemií Covid-19. Vyhodnocení dotazníku probíhalo vytvořením kontingenčních tabulek a souvislosti byly vyhodnocovány pomocí 2-testu, pro všechny testy byla zvolena hladina významnosti = 0,05. Byla ověřena souvislost ohrožení syndromem vyhoření u nelékařských zdravotnických pracovníků na interních a chirurgických oddělení. Výsledky: Dotazníkového šetření se zúčastnilo 137 respondentů z řad nelékařských zdravotních pracovníků (36 respondentů z interního a 101 respondentů z chirurgického oddělení). Aritmetické vyhodnocení Burnout Measure dotazníku ukázalo, že BQ skóre 4 dosáhlo 75 nelékařských zdravotnických pracovníků. Statistickou analýzou bylo potvrzeno, že syndromem vyhoření jsou ohroženi respondenti ve věkové skupině 51 a více let, vysokoškolsky vzdělaní pracovníci a s délkou praxe 16 a více let. Výsledek BM dotazníku potvrdil, že 44,7 % respondentů často se cítilo unaveně, 35,6 % se cítilo uhoněno. Vliv pandemie Covid-19 se projevil v odpovědích dotazníku BM, z 55 nelékařských zdravotnických pracovníků, kteří během pandemie pracovali na covidovém oddělení skóre BQ 4 dosáhlo 38 respondentů. Závěr: Průzkumným šetřením nebylo potvrzeno, že syndromem vyhoření jsou více ohroženi nelékařští pracovníci pracující na interních oddělení než na chirurgických odděleních. Příznaky syndromu vyhoření byly potvrzeny u 21 respondentů, psychické vyčerpání bylo zhoršeno osobním a pracovním diskomfortem během pandemie Covid-19.

Abstract:

Introduction: This thesis focuses on the issue of burnout syndrome among healthcare workers. It also emphasises the burden of the coronavirus pandemic, which has greatly contributed to the deterioration of the general health status and thus assisted to the emergence of burnout syndrome. Objective: To assess the risk of developing burnout syndrome in non-medical healthcare workers in the internal and surgical fields and to evaluate its probability of occurrence based on psychological and work load. Materials and Methods: The research was conducted using a standardized "Burnout Measure" (BM) questionnaire and custom questions related to socio-demographic data in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. The evaluation of the questionnaire was carried out by creating contingency tables and the connections were assessed using the 2-test. A significance level of =0.05 was chosen for all tests. We verified the risk of developing burnout syndrome in non-medical healthcare workers in the internal and surgical fields. Results: 137 respondents from the ranks of non-medical healthcare workers (36 from the internal and 101 from the surgical department) took part in the questionnaire survey. The arithmetical evaluation of the BM questionnaire showed that 75 respondents achieved a BQ score of 4. Statistical analysis confirmed that respondents in the age group of 51 and over, university-educated workers and those with 16 of more years of experience are at a high risk of developing burnout syndrome. The results of the BM questionnaire confirmed that 44.7% of respondents often felt tired, 35.6% felt rushed. The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic was reflected in the answers, with 38 of the 55 respondents who worked at a covid department during the pandemic achieving a BQ score of 4. Conclusion: The survey did not confirm that non-medical internal medicine healthcare workers were at a higher risk of developing burnout syndrome compared to their colleagues in the surgical departments. Symptoms of burnout syndrome were confirmed in 21 respondents. The mental exhaustion was aggravated by personal and work discomfort during the Covid-19 pandemic.
