Analysis of Stream Macroinvertebrate Response to Multiple-Stress Conditions

Abstract:

Společenstva sladkovodních bezobratlých jsou ovlivňována přirozenými a umělými vlivy. V rozvinutých zemích již není časté, že by zátěž vodního toku způsoboval jediný, zcela dominantní jev. Naopak řešíme často situaci, kdy dominantní síla chybí a výsledné podmínky jsou složitou souhrou mnoha negativních vlivů s malou silou. Tato dizertační práce zpracovává reakci vodních bezobratlých v mnohonásobně stresovaných ekosystémech 36 lokalit v povodí Moravy, ČR. Analyzovali jsme taxonomickou strukturu vzhledem k hydromorfologické degradaci, využití krajiny, habitatové kvalitě a bodovým zdrojům znečištění a vyhodnotili vliv těchto stresorů na biologicko-ekologické metriky a strukturu společenstev. Pro doplnění celkového obrazu vlivu využití krajiny, jsme analyzovali její vliv na metriky v několika měřítcích: v celkovém povodí, a 200 m širokém koridoru vzdáleném od 100 m do 10 km nad lokalitou. V neposlední řadě jsme zkoumali vztah metrik s přímo měřenou biologickou spotřebou kyslíku a koncentrací dusičnanů ve vodě. Cílem bylo identifikovat metriky, které nejlépe reagují na gradient celkového stresu, popsat závislost metrik a krajinného pokryvu na různých škálách jeho vyjádření a určit relativní vliv stresorů. K práci jsou přiloženy dva odborné články s detailní analýzou. Úvod práce poskytuje historický a současný přehled přístupů k analýze společenstev vodních bezobratlých a kapitolu o důsledcích kombinovaného stresu. Druhá část pojednává o metodách vzorkování, o biomonitoringu ČR a ukazujeme zde různé možnosti vyjádření vlastností společenstva a typy používaných metrik. Přehled je obohacen o některé složitější, či méně používané koncepty, takže tato část může sloužit jako praktický přehled pro zainteresované čtenáře. Současně jsou zde uvedeny detaily k většině nástrojů použitých v našem výzkumu. Třetí část se zabývá stresory ve vodních tocích. Jsou zde vysvětleny role kyslíku, samočisticí procesy ve vodě, habitatová kvalita a význam jednotlivých antropogenních tlaků: hydromorfologické degradace, urbanizace, bodových zdrojů znečištění a zemědělství. Poslední část obsahuje přehled vědeckých hypotéz, použitých dat a metod a vysvětluje, jak jsme při vypracování postupovali. Navazuje syntéza výsledků z dvou přiložených publikací a diskuze, ve které shrnuji nejdůležitější zjištění a jejich význam. Diskuze také uvádí silné a slabé stránky našeho designu a analýz, návrhy na vylepšení a možnosti dalšího výzkumu vodních společenstev v podmínkách kombinovaného stresu.

Abstract:

Freshwater communities are affected by natural and artificial phenomena. In developed countries it is not common that a watercourse is under pressure of a single dominant force. Instead, we are frequently faced with a situation that a dominant stressor is missing and the established conditions are a result of a complex interplay of many negative stressors with a smallish effect. This dissertation thesis evaluates the reaction of freshwater macroinvertebrate communities in multiple-stressed conditions of 36 sites of the Morava River basin, Czech Republic. We analysed taxonomic structure with regard to hydromorphological degradation, land use, habitat quality and point sources of pollution and we evaluated the impact of these stressors on bio-ecological metrics and community structure. To complete the overview of the land use impacts, we explored its dependency on the metrics at several spatial scales: in the full upstream catchment and in the 200 m wide stream corridor spanning from 100 m to 10 km upstream sampling sites. Finally, we investigated relationships between metrics and directly measured biological oxygen demand and concentration of nitrates. The objectives were to identify the metrics which have the most confident reaction to the overall stress gradient, to describe dependency of the land use types at various spatial scales and to determine the relative importance of the stressors. Attached at the end of the thesis are two publications which contain a detailed analysis. The thesis introduction gives a historical and contemporary overview of the freshwater ecosystems analysis and describes the impacts of multidimensional stress. The second part of the thesis addresses sampling methods, biomonitoring programme in the Czech Republic and shows the types of community descriptors and metrics. This overview is enhanced by some more difficult or less used methods, so it can be used as a practical guide. The details are provided for the majority of metrics we used in our research. Third part looks into freshwater pressures. I explain the role of oxygen, water self-purification process, habitat quality and the importance of individual anthropogenic pressures: hydromorphological degradation, urbanization, point sources of pollution and agriculture. The last part of the thesis contains an overview of our research hypotheses, used data and methods, and it explains how we proceeded. It is followed by a synthesis of the results of the two publications and by a discussion where I summarize the major findings and its implications. The discussion also contains strengths and weaknesses of our research design and analyses, propositions for improvements and suggests further research in the field of multiple-stressed freshwater communities.
