Lollard social networks: An analysis of heresy trial records from Kent (1511-1512)

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá záznamy z biskupského vyšetřování hereze v oblasti Kentu v letech 1511–1512. Výzkum zaměřený na strukturu a vztahy podezřelých, obvykle označovaných jako lollardi, využívá perspektivu analýzy sociálních sítí (SNA) včetně exponenciálních modelů náhodných grafů (ERGM). Tento interdisciplinární přístup – kombinace humanitních a společenských věd spolu s formalizovaným přístupem k analýze dat – prozkoumává sociální vazby podezřelých, jejich interakce, demografické údaje a heterodoxní názory uvedené v záznamech z vyšetřování. Kromě obecnější explorace sítě šíření a toku heretických vazeb výzkum také testuje hypotézy formulované v předchozím bádáním o lollardství. Bylo zjištěno, že lollardské ženy v Kentu měly jen zřídka vazby na jiné ženy. Nicméně co se týče domácnosti, nebyly pouze pasivními svědky heretických aktivit svých manželů, a v některých případech jejich vliv domácnost překračoval. Ukázalo se, že rodinné a sousedské vazby sehrály nezanedbatelnou roli při šíření heretických názorů. Rovněž byla prozkoumána role obžalovaných, proti nimž byly namířeny výpovědi svědků. Překvapivě nebyli nejvlivnějšími osobami ve zkoumané síti, avšak měli tendenci být spíše aktivními participanty při heretických diskuzích než pasivními posluchači.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on records of Kent episcopal trials of heresy suspects in 1511–1512, generally framed as Lollards, from a structural and relational perspective informed mostly by social network analysis (SNA) including exponential random graph models (ERGM). This interdisciplinary approach, bridging between humanities and the social sciences, and utilising a formalised approach to data analysis, explores the suspects’ social ties, interactions, demography, and beliefs as documented in the records. Besides a general exploration of the network of heretical interactions it also tests hypotheses about Lollards as formulated by previous research. It was demonstrated that women in Kent had very rarely heretical ties to other women. However, their influence in their household was far from just being passive witnesses of their husbands’ heresy, and there are cases in which the influence reaches beyond the household. The role of neighbourly ties and kinship was explored, and it was proven that such ties indeed play a significant role in the exchange of heretical opinions. The role of the defendants was also explored, and surprisingly they are not the most central people in the network, although they tend to be more active participants in the heretical interactions rather than passive recipients.
