Second language acquisition of English in middle-aged and elderly native Czech speakers: the effectiveness of selected second language acquisition methods

Abstract:

This thesis "Second language acquisition of English in middle-aged and elderly native Czech speakers: the effectiveness of selected second language acquisition methods examines the effectiveness of selected second language acquisition (SLA) methods for teaching specific chapters of English grammar to middle-aged and elderly learners. The theoretical part introduces the SLA methods, explains their principles, and discusses their relevance for middle-aged and elderly learners. The practical part tests these methods through structured study sessions that combine theory and practice. The author observes participants' behaviour during these study sessions, collects their feedback, and assesses their gains through tests to evaluate impact of the chosen methods. This research studies how middle-aged and elderly learners react to different SLA methods, considering both quantitative and qualitative results. The results provide insight into the advantages and disadvantages of different SLA methods for adult learners and offer opportunities and recommendations on how to make SLA easier and more engaging for them.
