Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá významem segmentální a suprasegmentální výslovnosti v tlumočení. Cílem práce je ukázat, že by tlumočníci neměli zanedbávat zlepšování výslovnosti v jazyce, do kterého překládají a který není jejich jazykem mateřským, jelikož výslovnost může mít významný negativní či pozitivní vliv na vnímání celkové kvality tlumočení posluchači. Teoretická část obsahuje obecné informace o tlumočení, popis anglické prozódie a přehled hlásek anglického jazyka s důrazem na ty, na jejichž procvičování by se nerodilí mluvčí měli zaměřit, přičemž jako předloha sloužila kniha Gimson’s pronunciation of English od Alana Cruttendena. Část práce je věnována intonaci, která při tlumočení hraje specifickou roli. V praktické části práce je popsán průzkum a analyzovány jeho výsledky. Průzkumu se zúčastnilo 12 respondentů s pokročilou znalostí anglického jazyka. Jejich úkolem bylo shlédnout čtyři záznamy tlumočníků překládajících do angličtiny, která nebyla jejich rodným jazykem, a poté ohodnotit výslovnost a celkovou kvalitu tlumočení či profesionalitu těchto tlumočníků. Tlumočník, který obdržel nejnižší hodnocení za profesionalitu, získal nejméně bodů i za výslovnost. Tlumočník, který se respondentům z hlediska výslovnosti zdál být nejblíže rodilému mluvčímu, získal za profesionalitu bodů nejvíce. Z těchto výsledků lze usuzovat, že velmi dobrá výslovnost může vést k pozitivnímu hodnocení tlumočení posluchači. Nesrozumitelná řeč tlumočníka naopak nemůže být vnímána jako profesionální.

Abstract:

The focus of the present study is the importance of pronunciation (both segmental and suprasegmental) in interpreting. It aims to demonstrate that the improvement of pronunciation skills in the interpreter’s second language into which he or she works should not be neglected since pronunciation can have a significant negative or positive effect on the perception of the overall quality of an interpretation by the audience. The theoretical section of this thesis includes information on interpreting in general, a description of English prosody, and an overview of the sounds of English based on Gimson’s pronunciation of English by Cruttenden with emphasis put on those which should be practised by foreign learners in particular. The special role of intonation in interpreting is discussed as well. In the research section, the survey carried out for this thesis is described and the results it has produced analysed. 12 advanced speakers of English have been asked to assess 4 recordings of interpreters working into English (their second language) in terms of their pronunciation and overall quality of the interpretation or professionalism of the interpreters. The interpreter who has been perceived as being least professional has received the lowest rating for his pronunciation. Similarly, the pronunciation of the best interpreter has been rated as being the most native-like of the four. These results imply that a very good pronunciation can lead to a positive evaluation of the interpretation by the listeners. An interpreter providing an unintelligible interpretation, on the other hand, cannot be seen as a professional.
