Abstract:

Tato práce pojednává o použití World of Warcraft jako nástroje pro získání druhého jazyka. Práce je rozdělena do tří hlavních kapitol, které jsou dále rozčleněny. Hlavním cílem této práce je seznámit čtenáře s různými hypotézami o osvojování druhého jazyka, které vyvinul lingvista Stephen Krashen a představit, jakým způsobem mohou hráči World of Warcraft získat znalosti anglického jazyka. První kapitola představuje Krashenovy hypotézy druhého jazyka a objasňuje je čtenáři. Druhá kapitola je rozdělena na dvě části. První se zaměřuje na žánr MMORPG a samotný WoW, zatímco ve druhé jsou na specifické rysy WoW aplikovány na hypotézy z první kapitoly. Třetí kapitola je zaměřena na výzkum, který byl pro tuto práci proveden. Jsou zkoumány dvě výzkumné skupiny, z nichž jedna se skládá z mezinárodních hráčů, zatímco druhá se skládá pouze z českých hráčů. Výzkum zkoumá, jak se odpovědi respondentů spojují s osvojováním druhého jazyka ve WoW. Výsledky ukazují, že Krashenovy hypotézy lze na WoW aplikovat mnoha různými způsoby.

Abstract:

This thesis is about using World of Warcraft as a tool for second language acquisition. The thesis is divided into three main chapters which are then further subdived. The main aim of this thesis is to introduce the reader to different hypotheses of second language acquisition developed by linguist Stephen Krashen and present in which ways can the players of World of Warcraft acquire English language knowledge. The first chapter introduces the Krashen’s second language acquisition hypotheses and clarifies them to the reader. The second chapter is divided into two parts. The first one focuses on the MMORPG genre and WoW itself while in the second one the hypotheses from the first chapter are applied to specific features of WoW. The third chapter focuses on the research which was conducted for this thesis. There are two researched groups examined, one of them consists of international players while the other one consists of only Czech players. The research examines how the responses provided by the respondents associate with second language acquisition in WoW. The results demonstrate that Krashen’s hypotheses may be applied to WoW in many different ways.
