Diversity and systematics of Central African anurans (Phrynobatrachus and Afrobatrachia)

Abstract:

Střední Afrika je i přes velký zájem výzkumníků stále jednou z nejméně prozkoumaných oblastí světa. Vděčí za to nedostatečnou infrastrukturou a v některých oblastech dosud nedotčenému původnímu neprostupnému deštnému lesu. Střední Afrika proto stále skýtá množství dosud nepopsaných druhů živočichů a rostlin. Nebo druhů, které jsou známy pouze z malého množství materiálu často pocházejícího jen z jedné lokality v některých z odlehlých částí regionu. Tato práce se blíže věnuje dvěma početným skupinám žab, s nimiž se můžeme setkat pouze v subsaharské Africe. Konkrétně jde o terestrický až semi-akvatický rod <i>Phrynobatrachus</i> (afroskokan, Phrynobatrachidae) a velice různorodou skupinu Afrobatrachia. První část práce se věnuje skupině Afrobatrachia na kterou se zaměřují tři publikace. Konkrétněji se věnují čeledi Hyperoliidae (rákosničkovití). První publikace odhaluje skutečnou identitu a systematickou pozici málo známého druhu „<i>Hyperolius</i>“ <i>robustus</i>, vyúsťující v popis nového rodu, <i>Congolius</i>, endemického v centrální Konžské pánvi. Následující publikace se zaměřuje na systematickou pozici jiného málo známého taxonu, rodu <i>Kassinula</i>. Naše výsledky podporují evoluční jedinečnost a tedy validitu tohoto rodu a poukazují na nesrovnalosti v recentně provedené revizi vyšších taxonomických jednotek čeledi Hyperoliidae. Vhodné kroky pro nápravu těchto nesrovnalostí byly provedeny včetně zavedení nové podčeledě Acanthixalinae. Třetí publikace se zaměřuje na systematickou pozici středo-konžského druhu <i>Hyperolius sankuruensis</i> a odhaluje jeho nepředpokládanou příbuznost se západoafrickou druhovou skupinou <i>H. concolor</i>, jejíž taxonomická revize je zde také představena. Zbylé dvě publikace se zaměřují na rod <i>Phrynobatrachus</i>. Přesněji na klad Kamerunské radiace sestávající z druhů endemických v Kamerunských horách a přilehlých nížinných oblastech. V rámci této radiace jsou popsány dva nové miniaturní druhy ze severní části tohoto horského pásma, <i>P. arcanus</i> a <i>P. mbabo</i>, a je zde navrženo pět druhových skupin. Následující publikace se potom blíže věnuje druhovému komplexu <i>P. steindachneri</i>, v němž odhaluje nový druh, <i>P. amieti</i>, a mezidruhové křížení, včetně porozumění morfologické variability.

Abstract:

Despite the great interest of researchers, Central Africa is still one of the least explored regions of the world. This is due to a lack of infrastructure and, in some areas, untouched impenetrable native rain forest. Central Africa therefore still offers an abundance of previously undescribed species of animals and plants. Or species that are known only from a small amount of material often from a single locality in one of the remote parts of the region. This thesis takes a closer look at two species-rich groups of frogs found only in sub-Saharan Africa. Specifically, the terrestrial/semi-aquatic genus <i>Phrynobatrachus</i> (Phrynobatrachidae) and the very diverse Afrobatrachia group. The first parts deals with the Afrobatrachia group. Three publications focus specifically on the family Hyperoliidae. The first reveals the true identity and systematic position of a little-known tree frog, “<i>Hyperolius</i>” <i>robustus</i>, which resulted into the description of a new genus, <i>Congolius</i>, endemic to the central Congo Basin. The following publication investigates the systematic position of another little-known taxon, the genus <i>Kassinula</i>. Our results support the evolutionary uniqueness and thus the validity of this genus and highlight inconsistencies in recent revisions of suprageneric classification of the family Hyperoliidae. Appropriate steps have been taken to correct these discrepancies, including the introduction of a new subfamily, Acanthixalinae. The third publication focuses on the systematic position of the central Congo species <i>Hyperolius sankuruensis</i> and reveals its unforeseen affinity with the West African <i>H. concolor</i> species group, the taxonomic revision of which is also presented here. The other two publications focus on the genus <i>Phrynobatrachus</i>. More specifically on the Cameroon radiation clade consisting of species endemic to the Cameroon Volcanic Line and adjacent lowland areas. Within this radiation, two new miniature species from the northern part of this mountain range are described, <i>P. arcanus</i> and <i>P. mbabo</i>, and five secies groups are introduced. The following publication takes a closer look at the <i>P. steindachneri</i> species complex, revealing a new species, <i>P. amieti</i>, and interspecific hybridization, including understanding of the morphological variation.
