The Lord of the Rings, Fan Videos and Narrativity

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá fandomem jako aktivním publikem, které je typické svými alternativními způsoby interpretace a práce s mediálními texty. To je umožněno rozšířením nových médií a jejich vlastnostmi, které umožňuji participaci amatérů na kulturní produkci. Práce fandom nejprve popisuje jako specifickou subkulturu, která se svým nakládáním s texty vymezuje vůči dominantní kultuře. To provádí především pomocí teorie Stuarta Halla a Henryho Jenkinse. Poté se práce věnuje fanouškovské tvorbě ve formě videí nahraných na server YouTube. Konkrétně se jedná o videa vycházející z Tolkienova Pána prstenů a Hobita a jejich filmových adaptací. Zvolenou metodou je narativní analýza, která se zaměřuje především na způsob, jakým fanouškové s narací zachází. A nakolik je na ni kladen důraz oproti spektáklu a dalším vizuálně komunikačním strategiím mainstreamové postklasické kinematografie. Ta je zde prezentována jako dominantní kultura.

Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis deals with a fandom as an active audience. It is characterized by its alternative modes of interpretation and treatment of media texts. These modes are enabled by the spread of new media. New media characteristics enable participation of amateurs in the cultural production. Firstly, the thesis describes the fandom as a specific subculture which uses its treatments of media texts to define itself against a dominant culture. This is done mainly by using theories of Stuart Hall and Henry Jenkins. Secondly, the thesis deals with the fan production in the form of videos uploaded to YouTube. Specifically, it deals with videos originating in the fandom of Tolkien’s books „The Lord of the Rings“, „The Hobbit“ and its cinematographic adaptations. The selected method is narrative analysis. The analysis is focused on fan modes of working with the narration and emphasizing its role. This emphasis is understood in contrast to the increasing role of spectacle and other visual and communication strategies of mainstream postclassical cinematography. In the context of the thesis, the mainstream postclassical cinematography is presented as the dominant culture.
