Science Podcast. A case study of cohesion and coherence in "The Skeptics Guide to the Universe"

Abstract:

Diplomová práce ‘Vědecký podcast’ s podtitulem ‘Případová studie koheze a koherence ve „Skeptikově průvodci vesmírem“’ se zabývá analýzou koheze v mluvené řeči popularizátorů vědy, a to na příkladu oblíbeného amerického podcastu „Skeptikova průvodce vesmírem“. Studie definuje kohezní prostředky typické pro vědecký podcast a podrobně je rozebírá pomocí jak kvantitativní, tak kvalitativní analýzy. Podrobně je srovnává s prostředky psaného a mluveného akademického projevu, i s prostředky používanými neformální angličtinou, a podrobně je rozebírá. Srovnává také popularizovaný text podcastu s originální verzí. Snaží se tedy odpovědět na otázku, jaké kohezní prostředky používají popularizátoři vědy, konkrétně jak jsou používány ve vědeckém podcastu a v procesu popularizace vědeckých článků. V rámci práce dochází ke srovnávací analýze, k analýze vztahů mezi jednotlivými kohezními prostředky a tématy kohezního vývoje. Práce bere tyto prostředky jako na významné prvky, které přispívají k definici vědeckého podcastu jakožto významného žánru. V teoretické části je vědecký podcast podrobně definován a srovnáván s ostatními relevatními žánry. Studie z praktické části podporuje tvrzení o vědeckém podcastu z části teoretické. Práce také poukáže na možné důsledky a využití poznatků o procesu popularizace vědeckého diskurzu v pedagogické profesi neboli na to, jak je možné efektivně předávat poznatky profesionálů veřejnosti.

Abstract:

The Master’s Thesis ‘Science Podcast’ subtitled ‘A case study of cohesion in “The Skeptics' Guide to the Universe”’ deals with cohesion analysis of the spoken language of scientific communicators. It analyzes excerpts of the long-time running American podcast “The Skeptics' Guide to the Universe“. The thesis defines devices typical for the science podcast and analyzes them in context. Cohesion in the podcast is compared with cohesive devices of both written and spoken academic language of science as well as informal English. Cohesive relations and themes of cohesive development are discussed. The research thus tries to answer the question of what cohesive devices are typically used by science communicators and, particularly, how cohesive devices are used in science podcasts. The cohesive devices of the science podcast are thus regarded as important features of this genre and contribute to the definition of the unique term science podcast, discussed in the theoretical part. The practical part centers around the quantitative, qualitative and comparative analysis carried out in depth. The thesis also draws some pedagogical implications concerning the use of scientific discourse in new media, concretely the ways how is it possible to effectively present findings of the professionals to the public.
