The ecumenical dialogue of the Old Catholic community with the Church of England in the period of shaping modern Old Catholicism to the establishment of a full sacramental community (1870 – 1931)

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá vývojem ekumenického dialogu starokatolického společenství s církví anglikánskou v období od formování novodobého starokatolictví okolo roku 1870 až do ustavení plného svátostného společenství, tzv. interkomunia, v roce 1931 v Bonnu. Chronologicky sleduje ekumenický přesah konkrétních oboustranných rozhovorů, vzájemných kontaktů, oficiálních prohlášení a výsledků konferencí. Po stručném úvodu v první kapitole mapuje práce v kapitole druhé konstituující starokatolická jednání a kongresy, jež určily ekumenické směřování nové církve a zachycuje reakci představitelů anglikánského společenství. V kapitole třetí nastiňuje společné ideje obou církví s důrazem na jejich ekumenický přesah, vzájemné hledání styčných bodů a cesty k dalšímu.sblížení. Podrobněji se věnuje starokatolickým unijním konferencím v Bonnu v letech 1874 a 1875, jež ukázaly rozpolcenému křesťanstvu možnost znovusjednocení a všímá si snah o vzájemné přiblížení ze strany anglikánského společenství, vyjádřené především v rezolucích z Lambethských konferencí, konaných v letech 1878 a 1888. První polovina čtvrté kapitoly se zabývá problémy, které zpomalily slibně započatý dialog obou církví, a to především neuznání posloupnosti apoštolských svěcení ze strany Utrechtské církve Nizozemí a sporné konsekrace starokatolického biskupa Harrise Mathewa v Anglii. Obě nesnáze společenství zdárně překonala, což popisuje druhá polovina kapitoly. Kapitola pátá se věnuje jednáním, jež přímo předcházela ustavení plného svátostného společenství, a to Lambethské konferenci v roce 1930 a konferenci v Bonnu 1931. Dále popisuje samotné uzavření interkomunia a jeho ekumenický přínos. V závěru nastiňuje okamžité výhody této dohody pro věřící obou církví a také vzniklou kritiku ze strany teologů.

Abstract:

The work deals with the development of ecumenical dialogue of the Old Catholic community with the Church of England in the period of shaping modern Old Catholicism around 1870 to the establishment of full sacramental community, called intercommunion, in 1931 in Bonn. It follows chronologically the ecumenical dimension of specific bilateral dialogues, mutual contacts, official statements and the results of conferences. After a brief introduction in the first chapter, the work surveys in the second chapter the constituting Old Catholic talks and congresses that determined the ecumenical direction of a new church and describes the response of the Anglican community. The third chapter outlines the common ideas of both churches with the emphasis on ecumenical overlap, common search for liaisons and ways to further rapprochement. It devotes in detail to Old Catholic union conferences at Bonn in 1874 and 1875, which showed the split Christendom the possibility of reunification, and it notices the pursuit of the mutual approach of the Anglican Communion, expressed especially in resolutions from the Lambeth Conferences held in 1878 and 1888. The first half of the fourth chapter deals with the problems that slowed the promisingly initiated dialogue of both churches, especially the non-recognition of the apostolic succession by the Dutch Church of Utrecht and the controversial consecration of Old Catholic bishop Harris Mathew in England. The communities successfully overcame both difficulties, which describes the second half of the chapter. The fifth chapter deals with negotiations that directly preceded the establishment of full sacramental community, i.e. the Lambeth Conference in 1930 and the conference in Bonn in 1931. Further it describes the conclusion of intercommunion itself and its ecumenical contribution. At the end it outlines the immediate benefits of this agreement for believers of both churches and also its criticism by theologians.
