Sequestration of death in late modernity

Abstract:

Tato práce se věnuje nastínění problematiky vytěsňování smrti v kontextu pozdně moderních společností, jak je definují především Anthony Giddens a Ulrich Beck. Cílem je identifikovat sociální mechanismy, které vytěsňování umožňují a definovat procesy, kterými se tak děje. Důraz je kladen zejména na genealogii ustavování subjektivního výkladu sociální reality, a interpretace role jedince v ní, v průběhu transformace společnosti k její pozdně moderní podobě a vyvstalou nutnost svépomocné konstrukce vlastní biografie. Závěry práce naznačují, že jako klíčové momenty pro umožnění a motivaci k vytěsňování smrti na isntitucionální úrovni, lze označit raně moderní průnik tradičního a expertního vědění a jeho následnou reflexivní dekonstrukci. Na úrovni subjektivní potom jde především o problematickou začlenitelnost významu smtri do reflexivně přetvářené autobiogragie.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on outlining the problems of death sequestration in the late modern societies, which are defined mainly by Anthony Giddens and Ulrich Beck. The objectives of the thesis are to identify social mechanisms which enable sequestration, and to define processes through which it is done. The emphasis is primarily placed on genealogy of establishing the subjective interpretation of social reality, and interpretation of the role of an individual in such reality in the course of society transformation, and on the outcoming necessity of autonomous construction of self-narrative. The findings of the thesis indicate that the early modern breakthrough of traditional and expert knowledge and its subsequent reflexive deconstruction may be the key moments for enabling the death sequestration on an institutional level. The main concern on the subjective level then lies on the problematical integration of the meaning of death into the reflexively transformed self-narrative.
