Abstract:

Primárním cílem této diplomové práce je pozdvihnutí hororového žánru nad jeho pop-kulturní aspekt a jeho zdůraznění pro akademické prostředí. Tato práce představuje horror jako barvitý kulturní produkt vnímání vytvořeného v průběhu americké kolonizace, a tedy jako hodnotné téma pro současný literárně-kulturní výzkum. Použité zdroje jsou zejména texty psané puritánskými učenci, vůdci komunit a autory, píšícími o americké kolonizaci. První část diplomové práce představuje historické vnímání Ameriky v dobách kolonizace za pomoci analýzy puritánských vizí a cílů. Tyto náboženské vlivy jsou postaveny proti domorodým kulturám a pověrčivosti kolonistů. Za pomoci konceptu americké frontier je představeno rozdělení mezi civilizovaná sídla a nebezpečnou divočinu. Druhá část práce je věnovaná analýzám hororových děl a poukazuje na přítomnost stále relevantního kulturního vnímání popsaného v první části. Analýzy jsou rozděleny podle kontextu v rámci rozdělení na sídlo, frontier a divočinu mezi horory místa, horory komunit a horory prostorů. Třetí sekce pak zužuje analýzu na román Stephena Kinga Desperation. Tento román výrazně vychází z konceptů nastolených v předchozích částech práce s klíčovými aspekty přítomnými po celou délku knihy. Tyto analýzy prokazují značný vliv americké kolonizace na severoamerický hororový žánr a nastolují stále trvající kulturní narativ jako nedílný znak žánru.

Abstract:

The principal aim of this thesis is to elevate the horror genre above its pop-cultural aspect and bring it to academic attention. The thesis aims towards establishing the genre as a rich and complex product of cultural perceptions arising from the American colonization and, therefore, a valuable source for contemporary literary-cultural research. The sources used are primarily works of Puritan scholars, community leaders, and writers concerned with the topic of American colonization. The first section of the thesis establishes the historical perception of America during its colonization through analyses of the Puritan visions and goals. These religious views are confronted with the indigenous cultures and colonists’ superstitions. A division between the civilized settlement and dangerous wilderness is also established through the introduction of the concept of the American frontier. The second section offers analyses of works of horror, showing manifestations of the still relevant cultural perceptions established in the first section. The analyses are divided between three chapters, dependent on the context within the division of the settlement, the frontier, and the wilderness, between works of horror of places, horror of peoples, and horror of spaces. The third section narrows the analysis to a single work of horror literature, Stephen King’s novel Desperation. The novel makes use of the concepts established in the previous two sections with their key aspects manifesting throughout the book. Through these analyses, the American colonization is proved to be considerable influence on the North American horror genre, establishing the continuing cultural narrative as an essential aspect of the genre.
